Sir Eric Tansingco (middle) of Take One Animation Studio receives a token Sign Language Wall Clock from MCCID.

Probably the first of its kind, the Philippines will now have its first deaf animators as seven MCCID deaf alumni including Deaf Coordinator Ervin Reyes passed the pre-qualification examination given by Take One Animation Studio last November 3.

Eric Tansingco, company’s proprietor/manager, offered the opportunity for free to the deaf as part of his advocacy in providing jobs for less fortunate youth. This time, he wants to give chance to Persons With Disabilities to work for his future projects.

MCCID alumni starts the hands-on character drawing.

Now on its eleventh year, Take One Animation Studio specializes in 2D animation services for traditional Japanese and Western (Disney-type) animation. They also conduct 2D and 3D animation trainings and workshops. Among their hugely successful projects include Onepiece, DragonballZ, Precure, Flying Trapeeze and Mari & Gali. They also do clean-up and in-betweening works for TOEI Animation Philippines, the only subsidiary company outside Japan.

Sir Eric gives individualized instructions.

Aside from Reyes, others who passed and formed the first batch of trainees are Jepa Kerena Basilio, Gibson Cruz, Rommel Isagani Rosas, Richee Balatinsayo, Aisa Rizza Tura and Eleazar Fancubit. All of them were graduates of the three-year Diploma in Arts and Computer Design Technology course offered by MCCID. Deaf examinees from another school for the deaf failed to complete the evaluation.

All seven deaf started their rigid training last November 7 and is expected to complete the modules within a month. Daily and weekly evaluation will then be given to them.

Sir Eric hopes to fill up 80% of the slot coming from Persons With Disabilities. Based on his initial observation, he sees a great potential for deaf 2D Animators. Evaluation will again be given to the first batch, after which, they will be automatically hired to work as In-betweeners and assistant 2D Animators.

A total of five high school graduates attended. Other graduates include elementary students and those from their Community Based Rehabilitation program in far-flung barangays and districts.

Sir Jerome emphasizes the importance of studying harder and aiming for success in life even if people cannot hear. He also reminded the deaf that if they put their mind into it, they can get their dreams.

HRD Manager Levi Diestro receives an MCCID Sign Language Wall Clock as he pose with Sir Jojo and new deaf employees.

Good news! Air-21 Philippines, one of the Philippines largest freight and cargo forwarding company has recently hired MCCID graduates.

A total of eight deaf workers were hired by the company as Data Entry Operators. Six of them are MCCID Alumni. They are Owen Domagtoy (Batch 2005), John Victor Amos (Batch 2005), Lycille Macairan (Batch 2005), Rachel Ann Tapel (Batch 2006), Jocel Caraballo (Batch 2007) and Maricris Siping (Batch 2010). The other two are from other schools. They started their official day last October 4 by conducting a work-training.

Team Leader and Head Trainor Emil Basco conducts the first day training.

They currently work on graveyard shift (8:00 pm to 6:00 am) similar to call center agents. They encode package and parcel information. Their interest in hiring deaf started when one lady, Sheryll Rose Agarap, an AAIT Batch 2007 graduate from CAP College CFD applied in their company this April 2010.

According to Air21′s General Manager Levi Diestro, because of her diligence, good work ethics and adaptability with other co-employees, they floated the idea of hiring more deaf workers. The work fits them because it does not require too much human interaction and uses the technology of computers.

Through MCCID’s website, Air21′s Corporate Human Capital Management Assistant Recruitment Specialist Feddie Ross D.C. Saflor, was able to visit the school and inquired for possible hiring of deaf graduates. Then, through a series of meetings, typing speed evaluation screenings in MCCID and subsequent interviews at their main office in Paranaque City, they finally selected the eight workers.

Air21 representative Feddie Saflor introduces his company to MCCID President and Registrar.

For his part, MCCID President Remberto C. Esposa was truly grateful in trusting MCCID and deaf persons in general. He hoped that more collaborative efforts between Air21 and MCCID would materialize in the future.

Mr. Saflor screened the typing speed of deaf applicants at MCCID before the final scheduled interview.

Hiring of deaf workers in Air21 will be on a trial basis. Should their performance meet or even exceed the company’s standards, then Air21 would again open other opportunities to other deaf.

Another welcome addition to his numerous awards and accolades, MCCID Deaf Coordinator Ervin Reyes was one of the three deaf persons who received the first CAP College Foundation’s Most Outstanding Alumnus.

The awarding ceremony was held last Saturday, April 25 as part of the school’s 20th Commencement Exercises. Other recipients of the award are successful photographer-entrepreneur Dennis Rhoniel Balan and “Travel and Tours” operator Gilda Quintua. Balan belonged to the first batch (1991) while Reyes formed part of the second batch (1992). Incidentally, Ms. Quintua, a Batch 1999 graduate is also an MCCID alumna before continuing her studies at CAP College.

According to CAP College’s selection committee member and School Registrar May Andrada-Gasataya, the three were selected based on their outstanding performances in their respective fields as well as national and international recognitions.

Mr. Reyes attended the affair together with Sir Jojo Esposa Jr., who is also a former CAP College faculty way back in 1991. Last 2007, Ervin was recognized as one of the Most Outstanding Alumnus during the Centennial Celebration of the Philippine School for the Deaf.

After being accepted for On-the-Job training (OJT), some offices were convinced about the graduates’ skills. They did not let the deaf finish their training. Instead, they asked them to stay and continue working in their companies.

Among those who were immediately given job opportunities were: Aoi Bacsa – HLURB, Edmond Guzman Jr. – Isabela Capitol Hall, Villaflor Lagasca Jr. – Mandaluyong City Hall, Anthony Paez – Quezon City Hall, Grace Anne Pico – Rotary Club, R. The rest of the graduates are undergoing extended rigid corporate training under Nova Foundation. Those who performed well will be selected as candidates for future job placements similar to what they achieved with the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Congratulations to all the graduates of Batch 2008! May God continue to bless all of you!

MCCID Batch 2006 graduates and TESDA Scholars’ Rumijae Bubon, Emmanuel Cruz and Nonito Visagar Jr. were the latest Deaf encoders hired by the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

Rumijae is placed in the Passport Division while Emmanuel and Nonito are both assigned in the DFA branch office in Philippine International Convention Center. The three started working in June 2008. This brings to a total of six MCCID graduates who are employed out of 13 deaf persons trained by Nova Foundation for the Differently Abled. The rest came from other schools.

The other deaf previously hired since November 2007 include Renato Moran Jr., Rona May Delos Reyes- Savares and Ma. Teresa Vicente. Renato and Rona May are under the Passport Division while Ma. Teresa is positioned at the Courtesy Lane Department.

Rona May assisting a passport applicant

Hiring more personnel was necessary due to the requirement of DFA for additional manpower in their consular services particularly their passport division. Starting last year, all passports to be issued by DFA will be machine readable which will bear the data about its holder.

MCCID has been a faithful partner of Nova Foundation since 1996. After the student graduates, they are given further training in corporate setting by Nova Foundation. Once they pass their standards, they provide them with job placements both in the foundation and in other companies. Some noted MCCID and Nova trained deaf persons include Marlyn Pio (Head Proofreader/Encoder), Lezzer Gonzales (PC technician) and Gimar Aguillon (web designer).

To know more about Nova Foundation, visit their official website and for Department of Foreign Affairs, go to their Official Website.
