“Despite the hardships brought about by recent series of calamities, MCCID has many blessings to be thankful for and celebrating our 16th year of existence is truly important.“, thus said the MCCID Training Director Jojo Esposa during the school’s 16th Founding Anniversary last October 30, 2009 at Town and Country Hotel.

As with every year, drama skits and comedy were presented by each year level and section. But this time, the second and third year students showed their talents on a 5-minute video presentation directed by Sir Ervin Reyes. The first year group performed their comedic acts on stage.

One big difference in this year’s celebration was the participation of the MCCID branch in Tiaong, Quezon. They presented their own brand of comedy skit. The MCCID main student body and administrators were thankful for the efforts made by the branch in coming over to Manila in spite of the impending typhoon that might ravage their province in Southern Philippines.

This year is also the first time the school celebrated under a new MCCID College of Technology, Inc. name.

Winners of each presentation received medals and special recognitions. They were judged according to the clarity of their theme, full participation of each member, props and special effects and audience impact. The members of the Board of Judges include Ma’am Loida Alvarez of Tiaong, Ms. Lizette Mabini and Ms. Ma. Liza Plata Batch 2003 Alumni who are both successfully employed for more than five years now. The presentation of second year students will be included in the final grades of their Deaf Culture subject while each comedy skit was evaluated by the judges from among the three selections; “Very Good”, “Good” and “Fair”.

A video presentation of “From Why to How, Accessible ICT” was also presented during the program. The short docu-film was a collaborative efforts of Asia Pacific Development Center on Disability, Japan International Cooperation Agency, National Council on Disability Affairs, Resources for the Blind and MCCID College of Technology. The video showcased the work made by the Philippines in promoting information and communications technology for the disabled persons. Complimentary DVDs were given to attendees for free. For more information, visit this related news.

The celebration ended with a feast of Filipino dishes with which everybody was completely satisfied.

The school administration was pleasantly surprised when the student organization donated a special large Gold-colored Sign Language Alphabet cased with a matching frame. The sign language frame was specially crafted by Ericson Guillermo. The group also gave a special collage of class photos printed in a huge white tarpaulin courtesy of Emil Zion Punzalan’s Fotoseszion Studio. Zion is also the event’s official photographer.

For his part, Sir Jojo Esposa, MCCID Training Director, accepted the gifts and thanked the student organization in behalf of the school administration. The two items are already displayed on the school’s lobby replacing the old styrofoam A-B-C Sign Language Board.

The celebration ended with a feast of Filipino dishes with which everybody was completely satisfied.

Fifteen years ago in 1993, two young Christian computer professionals, one hearing and one deaf, dreamed of an educational institution that can concentrate on the needs of the deaf through the use of computers. This field of work is fitted to them because it needs minimal supervision and communication skills.

Fifteen years later, MCCID is now a well established organization in the field of computer education for the deaf that is recognized both here and abroad. Although we may not claim that we are the first post secondary school for the deaf in the Philippines, still we are one of the pioneers in computer and technical education. We also take pride in providing access to job opportunities for our qualified deaf graduates.

MCCID is a non-sectarian, post-secondary, Christian foundation school for the deaf in the Philippines. It has trained and graduated more than 250 Filipino deaf since 1993. Noteworthy alumni received Presidential awards as well as international accolades and participations.

MCCID has also capitalized on the huge popularity and success of the Internet by being the first school to add courses on web page designing, Flash animation and digital photography. It is the first institution for the deaf that went online in 1997. Its graduate won an international award in Web Page Designing in 2003. Its website is the first recipient of “Disabled Friendly Wesite Award” for being accessible to Persons with Disabilities. MCCID is also the first advocate of Web accessibility among deaf organizations in 2004 and the first institute that published a book on Web Accessibility. MCCID’s students were able to design websites for Filipino foundations free of charge.

Among significant MCCID contributions to the field of Philippine deaf education are:

Became the first technical school for the deaf recognized in the Philippines;

Offering the first sign language course approved by the government;

Including Deaf culture as part of the curriculum;

Strongly promoting the use and propagation of Filipino Sign Language as part of the fourth wave including documentation of FSL in technical terms;

Advocating and teaching closed captions on videos played on the Internet;

Strengthening IT programs by participating in national and international skills competitions, and

Submitting Deaf students to government’s competency certification examinations in IT.

MCCID expects better things and bigger blessings to come as it reaches more milestones. We believe that the Deaf can do many things if given the right opportunity. To Christ be the glory!
