MCCID Bags Grand Prize in \”IT Global Challenge Korea\”

Ezekiel John Erpelo, freshman MCCID student, brought home Grand Prize in e-Life Category during the ‘IT Global Challenge for Youth with Disabilities’ in Song Do University, Incheon, Korea held from October 30 – November 2,2012. Aside from Erpelo, the 6-man “Make the Right Real Team Philippines” brought home another grand champion in e-Life for Caroll Ann de Belen (Deaf) from Manila High School and a special award in Slogan Making Contests for Joseph Gabriel Vesagas (Independent Learning Center). Erpelo won in Google Search category while De Belen won in MS Word and MS Excel category. \” The 6-man “MAKE THE RIGHT REAL- TEAM PHILIPPINES” led by the National Council on Disability Affairs staff Jennifer Garcia represented the country and bested other bets from 27 countries in this event held last October 29 to November 2, 2012. Ms. Garcia, herself with disability was the Team Coordinator, and was one of the presentors who spoke on “Accessible ICT in the Philippines”.

Academics 2010 Winners Announced

A total of 32 medals were won by students from various computer and non-technical courses during the annual Academic Competition 2010 week held from March 15 – 22. This year\’s competition was participated in for the first time by the MCCID College Bethsaida Branch from Tiaong, Quezon. Three of their finest students went to Cubao Main Campus and competed for the whole day of March 27. These are the winning designs made by students during the Adobe Photoshop Wallpaper Design contest held last March 17 as part of the school\’s yearly Academic Competition. The contest was administered by Ma\’am Dianne Barcelona-Salazar, herself a gold medalist in a national contest and a participant in an international tilt held in Japan in 2007. The contest rules were as follows: (1) Must be done within 45 minutes; (2) Must be fit as a desktop wallpaper with 1000 x 800 dimension; (3) Must not use any images from the Internet although Photoshop free template designs can be used. The judges were composed of MCCID faculty and staff. The winning designs appear below. These products clearly show how visually creative the deaf people are. You may download the wallpapers for free. Japan Rewards Cash to Philippine Team

The Japanese International Abilympics Organization, the group in charge of holding worldwide skills competition, recently gave cash grants amounting to ¥480,000 equally distributed to participants of the 7th International Skills Competition held at Shizuoka, Japan last November 2007. In a simple ceremony and reunion that took place at TESDA Women\’s Center last October 9, the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) led by its chairperson Ms. Rosie Lovely Romulo awarded the cash grant to the delegates in behalf of the Japanese organization. The awardees include MCCID team composed of Aldrin Gabriel (English Desktop Processing and Pottery competitor), Dianne Barcelona (English Text Processing Competitor) and Glenn Ortega (Web Page Design competitor). Other participants who received the cash rewards are Amelito Regalado (Painting competitor), John Lester Belicano (Floral Arrangement competitor), Minerva Cuevas (Dressmaking competitor), Alnoe Paler (Photography competitor) and Cristina Ignacio (Embroidery competitor). Two competitors from Baguio City and Mindanao were not able to attend because of lack of funds to support their travel expenses in going to Manila. Among the group, only Minerva and the two absentees are non-deaf. All the competitors received Php17,900 each. Academic Competition 2008 Begins

In line with the school\’s aim of providing venue for assessing the students\’ skills and showcasing their talents, MCCID has again held its annual Academic Competition from March 14 – 25, 2008. Now on its eight year, deaf students competed in 16 categories. All are subjects that they are taking up. Winners will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. They will be awarded on April 5, coinciding with Sportsfest and Cake and Fruit Raffle Draw. Philippines Participate in 7th International Skills Competition

The Philippine delegation led by National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons Executive Director Atty. Dulfie Shalim and Abilympics Philippines representative Nelia De Jesus participated in the 7th International Abilympics Skills Competition held at Shizuoka, Japan from November 13 – 19, 2007. A total of 11 persons with disabilities who won during the 12 Philippine National Skills Competition including MCCID alumni Dianne Barcelona, Aldrin Gabriel and Glenn Ortega. They did their best in competing against champions from 29 countries. Sir Jojo Esposa was among the coaches and the official sign language interpreter. Eventhough no one was able to bring home medals, it was a learning experience from the group. However, unofficially, only Aldrin Gabriel received the highest rank among the group (4th place) in English Desktop Publishing contest. This was according to the Filipino judge, Engr. Jeanette Reyes. Ms. Reyes is the TESDA representative of the group. However, issues were raised during the post-assessment of the event in comparison with previous competitions where the Philippines participated. Among them were the inclusion of Japanese as head judges in all competitions, non-display of finished products after the contest and the non-posting of complete rankings of all the competitors. Competition 2007 Winners Awarded

A total of 92 medals, four trophies including one 4 ft. tall trophy donated by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo were distributed during the 9th Annual Awarding Ceremony held last April 9, at MCCID Lecture Hall. Twenty seven medals were awarded to various academic competitions held. 65 gold sports medals were also awarded to those who won in different sporting events like basketball, volleyball, darts, chess, scrabble and badminton. Glass trophies were also awarded to the Most Valuable Players of both basketball and volleyball for boys and girls division. To add an even more exciting event, the Cake & Fruit Raffle draw was held. Three major prizes: Black Forest Cake with 1 doz. apples for the first prize, Mango Cake with 1 kl. grapes for 2nd prize and Chocolate Cake with 1 dozen ponkan were raffled off as well as eight consolation prizes of apples and ponkans. Held during April of each year, this culminating activity is very much awaited by MCCID students. It is in this day that their efforts in competing physically and intellectually are being rewarded.

MCCID wins 3rd Place in Waste Reuse Tilt

Gibson A. Cruz, 1st year DBT student won third place and \”Most Versatile Award\” in the On-the-Spot Waste Re-use Contest for his \”Gift Box\” entry while Dianne A. Barcelona\’s \”Picture Frame with Flower Vase\” won the Most Attractive award. The contest was held last July 21, 2006 at SM San Lazaro. A total of twenty four persons with disabilities competed in this event sponsored by the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP). The activity was in line with the yearly celebration of National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week. As the 3rd place winner, Gibson receives a P3,000 cash prize and a P5,000 scholarship grant from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). He also received P1,000 for the Most Durable award. Dianne on the other hand received a P1,000 cash prize. Cruz\’s winning entry was a gift box made from a discarded carton box and old newspapers used in making flower decorations at the top. Dianne also used carton box and old newspapers for her picture frame. MCCID wins Medals of Excellence in 12th PNSC

Once again, MCCID deaf students have proven their IT skills as the best in the Philippines by receiving four Gold Medals of Excellence during the 12th Philippine National Skills Competition held at three separate venues from December 5 – 8, 2005. From the five gold medalist who won in the NCR Abilympics Skills Competition just two weeks before, four of them successfully beaten their competitors from 12 different regions in the Philippines. MCCID alumnus bags bronze medal in International Skills Contest

MCCID Deaf Coordinator Ervin R. Reyes won the bronze medal in the 6th International Abilympics Skills Competition held at New Delhi, India last November 23 to December 2, 2003. He competed on the Creating Web Page Design Category against winners from 34 countries. Reyes was accompanied by his coach and interpreter Sir Jojo I. Esposa Jr. Philippines ranked 5th overall with deaf participants garnering two gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Gold medal winner in his category came from India. Taiwan participant received the silver medal while Ervin tied with China in third place. Ervin, an MCCID batch one graduate, became the country\’s representative in this worldwide contest for the disabled when he won the gold medal in the NCR-Regional Skills Competition last May 2001 and then on the 10th Philippines National Skills Competition in Davao City last September also in 2001. The Philippines delegation was led by the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Abilympics Philippines.
