MCCID College students again enjoyed their annual outing-swimming trip before the resumption of classes on January 6. But this time, it was held at God’s Love Farm and Resort in Bgy. Silangan, San Mateo, Rizal. The picturesque place is a few kilometers away from the future site of MCCID College. A total of 29 students, alumni and faculty joined in this year’s two-day stay from January 3-4, 2011.

Now on its tenth year, this activity has been a tradition of the school which started in 2002. After a long Christmas vacation and before the start of classes, students created the idea of unwinding and relaxing and at the same time renewing bonds and friendship among fellow students. What better way to do this, than to have an overnight fun and fellowship.

Similar to last year, MCCID students once again visited the annual Computer Manufacturers, Dealers and Distributors Association of the Philippines held at SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Saturday, December 4, 2010. But what’s different in this year’s event is that students from Tiaong, Quezon and City of San Fernando, Pampanga campuses joined the students from the Cubao Main Campus.

Dubbed “This is I.T!”, this year’s COMDDAP Expo 2010 showcases various consumer electronics with special focus on laptops, netbooks, ipods, bigger projectors and anti-virus softwares. Many students received various give aways such as ball pens, magazines, bags and other goodies.

A short lecture on designing 3D structures and buildings which will be placed as permanent fixtures in Google Earth was given by Mr. Salvador Lastrilla, COMDDAP Vice President and 3D Philippines Initiative Group. Google Philippines installed a big flat touch screen which shows Google Earth together with famous Philippine landmarks. Students were delighted to learn how to design a 3D edifice.

Despite the uncooperative weather due to typhoon Juan, students and faculty were able to enjoy touring the world famous Corregidor Island off Manila Bay last October 21.

This is the second time the students visited the island as part of their Visual Idea Development subject. A total of 33 second and third year Diploma in Arts and Computer Design class together with four teachers participated.

Previous classes usually hold their special tours within Metro Manila. This time, they had an opportunity of traveling to an island famous for its old ruins and World War history. They were able to appreciate the richness of Philippine past and how the Filipinos fought side by side with the Americans against the Japanese oppressors. Aside from that, students and faculty was also able to experience some ghost sightings during their trip.

Visual Idea Development Subject is an introductory course for arts and computer design students. It is in this subject where students learn to understand the variety of colors, textures, backgrounds, shades, balance and other basic principles of good design. On the last part, they will be brought to a particular place where they will use their cameras to capture special moments, situations and scenes following a pre-announced topic. Their outputs will then be printed and judged by selected professional artists. The result form part of their final examination.

As part of their Office Visit subject, the 3rd year graduating class is required to tour different factories and offices that are related to information technology and those that employ deaf people.

This school year, they were able to visit ten companies. Among them are private companies like GMA Network Center, TOEI Animation Studios, Bayantel Communications, Gardenia Food Corporation, Lucky Me Factory and Coca Cola Bottlers Philippines. Among government offices include Commission on Information and Communications Technology, National Telecommunications Commission, Central Bank Museum and Malacanang Palace. They also had a side trip at the world famous Picnic Grove in Tagaytay City.

“Office Visits” is one of the important subjects in students’ curriculum. Its main objective is for them to experience first-hand how a particular company operates and what work environment surrounds a deaf person. Aside from that, they may have an opportunity to be accepted by those companies that they visited.

MCCID College students again enjoyed their annual outing-swimming trip before the resumption of classes on January 7. A total of 32 students, alumni and faculty joined in this year’s two-day stay at Golden View Resort III Private Pool in Pansol, Calamba City, Laguna from January 4-5, 2010.

Now on its ninth year, this activity has been a tradition of the school which started in 2002. After a long Christmas vacation and before the start of classes, students created the idea of unwinding and relaxing and at the same time renewing bonds and friendship among fellow students. What better way to do this, than to have an overnight fun and fellowship. Laguna has always been a choice due to its hot pools, comfortable rooms and secured private resorts.

MCCID College Trainor Sir Edmond Guzman Jr. of Tiaong, Quezon and MCCID Training Director Jojo Esposa Jr. attended the ten-day Regional Workshop on Accessible Web-based Information Networking in Bangkok, Thailand sponsored by the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) from September 1 – 11, 2009.

Aside from the two, three other members from the Philippine Team include Mr. Dandy Victa and Mr. Reginaldo Tolentino of Technical Cooperation Division of the National Council on Disability Affairs and Ms. Marlene Mariano from Association of PWDs in Makati City. The team were the largest delegation.

APCD associate organizations from Asian countries like Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand also participated in the workshop. All expenses were paid by the organizers.

During the workshop, the participants were able to understand the concept of information accessibility for PWDs, UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Disability Equality, Concept Information Accessibility for PWDs, Concept of Information Networking,
Assistive Devices for Information Accessibility and Information Networking (Disability Focus).

Hands-on training on Joomla Content Management System with focus on W3C/ WAI on different disability (visual, hearing, learning, etc), Accessible Content by CMS were also conducted. Each participant was able to create their own dummy websites which were presented and evaluated by APCD and NECTEC resource persons.

One highlight of the event was the NECTEC presentation where the Philippines showed a strong performance among Asian countries and fared well even from other developed countries. This was according to a study made by the University of Worshester Faculty of Computing, UK in 2007. The study was based on the Global E-government Web Accessibility, an Empirical Examination among EU, Asian and African Sites by Ms. Joanne Kuzma.

A total of twenty faculty, staff and social worker students attended the basic sign language training conducted by MCCID Training Director Jojo Esposa from August 19 – 22, 2009 at Life Renewal College in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

MCCID head was invited by Aborlan School for the Deaf Director and Pastor Isagani Sta. Ana together with his wife Mrs. Sarah Sta. Ana. The activity was part of the Community Based Rehabilitation Program (CBR) of Deaf Evangelistic Alliance Foundation, Inc. (DEAF) in partnership with Christian Blind Mission (CBM). The sign language training was aimed to equip the participants with the proper sign language skill as well as become more aware about the Filipino deaf’s culture. The sign language systems and common problems encountered by workers for the deaf were also deliberated and discussed during post-workshop time in the evening.

Aside from the training, Sir Jojo together with MCCID Deaf Coordinator, Sir Ervin Reyes had an opportunity to visit the School for the Deaf in Aborlan, Palawan. The 5-hectare school compound is complete with boys and girls dormitories, school canteen, elementary and high school buildings, basketball courts, mini-park, rice and crop farms as well as library and CBR office. The Deaf School is being run by the able leadership of Ptr. Sta. Ana and his wife together with generous financial supports from Lamoiyan Corporation, CBM and Liliane Foundation Philippines.

Sir’s Jojo and Ervin were also able to visit the various popular tourist destinations of Palawan including the world renown Underground River. Through this activity, the team will be able to promote the province and entice foreign visitors especially the Persons with Disabilities to make Palawan as their destination of choice.

The Philippine Deaf Christian Community was privileged to be invited by Korean Yewon Church to attend as special guests to the 2009 World Deaf Mission Conference from August 1 – 7, 2009 at Seoul, South Korea.

Rev. Chung Eun-chu, Conference Chairman and Senior Pastor of Yewon Church wants Christ’s light to shine to the deaf all over the world including the Filipino people “where is is with filled the culture of darkness, deaf remnants, deaf lay leaders and deaf businessmen will arise.”

The nineteen-person Philippine Team was led by Pastor Julius Andrada, Deaf Pastor of Capitol City Baptist Church Deaf Ministry (CCBCDM) and Deaf Coordinator of CAP College Foundation. She was accompanied by his wife and CAP College Registrar May Andrada, their two children (Jules and Laicca) and their ward Miraluna Onggon.

The CCBC Deaf Ministry was composed of Ptr. Rolando Landicho, Catherine Mailem, Rodante De Torres and Jeremicah Penir. CAP College group includes Harold Viray, Michael Valois, Perseus Rendal, Ylena Kristina Reyes and Ms. Revie Garcia.

MCCID College Team was led by Sir Jojo Esposa who is also the team’s official sign language interpreter. Other members from MCCID include Sir Ervin Reyes, Sir Jerome Marzan, Eleazar Fancubit and Joanna Teves.

The Korean Team was led by Rev. Choi Duck-Keun, Director of the Department of Deaf Ministry, Deaf Asst. Pastor Juwon Chung and Sign language/English Interpreter Ms. Gloria Nayeon Kwon. Ms. Hanna Jang and Mr. Deayeob Kwan provided the English interpretation.

The conference aims to equip the deaf participants to commit themselves for spreading the Good News of God through Jesus Christ and evangelize the world focusing on deaf people. Based on Korean statistics, there are 300,000 Korean Deaf population and around 70 million Deaf people worldwide.

Aside from attending the conference, the Philippine Team were also treated to the beauty of Seoul, Korea. The team visited the Seoul Manmade Stream, National Museum of Korea, Namsan Cable Car and N Seoul Tower.

Aside from that, they may have an opportunity to be accepted by those companies that they visited.

In preparation for their upcoming On-the-Job Training and eventual employment, the graduating class experienced first hand how to apply for important government documents and credentials needed last January 13 and 15.

All 21 deaf students braced themselves as they meet the challenge of acquiring forms and documents on a government facility. They bravely fell in line, asked for directions, sought assistance and carefully read signs and intructions posted on the walls and billboards. All without the aid of a sign language interpreter.

On the first day, they went to the National Statistics Office in East Avenue, Quezon City. They mainstreamed with regular people in filling up forms, waiting in line, having their names called and answer interviews in order to get their original birth certificates. 

After getting their receipts and certificates, next stop was the Social Security System accross the street. They applied for the SSS ID Numbers. Only students living in Quezon City were accommodated. Others who live in various cities applied on the next day. SSS Number is an important credential in applying for jobs.

Third stop was at Quezon City Hall to get their Community Tax Certificates or commonly called “Residence Certificates” for 2009. Nearby was the QC Social Welfare Office. So they were also able to apply for their Persons With Disabilities Special ID. 

On the 15th, the students were again challenged to get their National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Clearances. The head office is in Carriedo St., Quiapo, Manila. This was pretty much a challenge for them because their subject teacher (Sir Jojo Esposa) did not allow them to go to the Courtesy/Disabled Persons Lane. They have to experience the same difficult task of getting it as with regular people. So they followed the steps on how to apply based on what they see on big billboards and doing what other people does. 

In the afternoon, deaf students living in Manila went to Manila City Hall to get their Residence Certificates and applied for PWD IDs. All throughout the activity, their instructor patiently guided them at a distance. 

Going through these activities strengthen the deaf person’s feeling of independence and giving them a taste of what the real world is experiencing.  Also, preparing this before they graduate is important so that they won’t be cramming about it once they are ready for applying for jobs.

This activity is part of their Pre-employment Preparation Subject under Values Education. MCCID has been doing this since 1995.

MCCID College students again enjoyed their annual outing-swimming trip before the resumption of classes on January 8. A total of 50 students, alumni and faculty joined in this year’s two-day stay at Golden View Resort II Private Pool in Pansol, Calamba City, Laguna from January 5-6, 2009.

Now on its eighth year, this activity has been a tradition of the school which started in 2002. After a long Christmas vacation and before the start of classes, students created the idea of unwinding and relaxing and at the same time renewing bonds and friendship among fellow students. What better way to do this, than to have an overnight fun and fellowship. Laguna has always been a choice due to its hot pools, comfortable rooms and secured private resorts.

After three years of failing to attend, MCCID students once again visited the annual Computer Manufacturers, Dealers and Distributors Association of the Philippines held at SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia last Saturday, December 7.

Dubbed “Love IT, Live IT”, this year’s COMDDAP Expo 2008 showcases various consumer electronics with special focus on laptops, netbooks and bigger projectors. In the middle of the expo area is a robotic gadget competition participated by high school students.

This year’s batch of MCCID students got the first taste of exhibit because the venue was held in SM Mall of Asia which is more accessible. Previous events were held at The Fort in Taguig City where it can only be reached by private vehicles and special bus services. Another special event, Sony’s Christmas Expo 2008 happened on the same venue. So the students were able to visit two activities. They enjoyed bringing home special prizes and gifts.

As part of their Visual Idea Development subject, second year Diploma in Arts and Computer Design class visited the world famous Corregidor Island last October 23.

Previous classes usually hold their special tours within Metro Manila. This time, they had an opportunity of traveling to an island famous for its old ruins and World War history. They were able to appreciate the richness of Philippine past and how the Filipinos fought side by side with the Americans against the Japanese oppressors. Aside from that, students and faculty was also able to experience some ghost sightings during their trip.

Visual Idea Development Subject is an introductory course for arts and computer design students. It is in this subject where students learn to understand the variety of colors, textures, backgrounds, shades, balance and other basic principles of good design. On the last part, they will be brought to a particular place where they will use their cameras to capture special moments, situations and scenes following a pre-announced topic. Their outputs will then be printed and judged by selected professional artists. The result form part of their final examination.

As part of their Office Visit subject, the 3rd year graduating class is required to tour different factories and offices that are related to information technology and those that employ deaf people.

This school year, they were able to visit ten companies. Among them are GMA-7, Lamoiyan Corporation, National Computer Center, Lucky Me Factory and Malacanang Palace. Two of MCCID alumni work at Lamoiyan, makers of Hapee toothpaste while Emilie Padullon has been with Malacanang Palace since 1991.

“Office Visits” is one of the important subjects in students’ curriculum. Its main objective is for them to experience first-hand how a particular company operates and what work environment surrounds a deaf person. Aside from that, they may have an opportunity to be accepted by those companies that they visited.
