Similar to last year, MCCID students once again visited the annual Computer Manufacturers, Dealers and Distributors Association of the Philippines held at SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Saturday, December 4, 2010. But what’s different in this year’s event is that students from Tiaong, Quezon and City of San Fernando, Pampanga campuses joined the students from the Cubao Main Campus.

Dubbed “This is I.T!”, this year’s COMDDAP Expo 2010 showcases various consumer electronics with special focus on laptops, netbooks, ipods, bigger projectors and anti-virus softwares. Many students received various give aways such as ball pens, magazines, bags and other goodies.

A short lecture on designing 3D structures and buildings which will be placed as permanent fixtures in Google Earth was given by Mr. Salvador Lastrilla, COMDDAP Vice President and 3D Philippines Initiative Group. Google Philippines installed a big flat touch screen which shows Google Earth together with famous Philippine landmarks. Students were delighted to learn how to design a 3D edifice.

Tiaong, Quezon Campus was opened in 2009 under MCCID College community based school strategy. The facilities, additional instructors and direct supervision come from Bartimaeus Center for Alternative Learning (Bethsaida, Inc.) headed by Pastor Benjamin Hugo and School Coordinator Loida Alvarez. Additional funding assistance comes from Liliane Foundation Philippines.

City of San Fernando, Pampanga Campus officially opened in 2010. It is also under MCCID’s community based strategy. However, its program is unique because a special project was formed. Dubbed, “Computer Trainers’ Education for the Deaf Project”, the program is completely funded by Liliane Foundation Philippines. All 26 students are considered as scholars and are expected to complete the three-year training in order to become future teachers/trainors for the deaf which will be deployed to various LFP partner organization nationwide. Their mission is to train other deaf in information and communications technology related field.

Innocencio Magtoto Memorial Foundation, Inc. provides for the facilities, additional instructors and direct supervision. Ms. Claire Magtoto, IMMFI Board Member serves as the school director while Ms. Antonita Gomez is the officer assigned by LFP to oversee the program. Incidentally, Ms. Gomez is LFP’s Regional Mediator for Central Luzon Cluster.

Other cluster members include Akapin, Inc. (Bulacan), Archdiocese of IBA (Zambales) and Brothers of Charity (Baguio, Pangasinan). Sir Lucky Paltep, a MCCID graduate, is assigned to Pampanga while Sir Ace Diaz is placed in Tiaong, Quezon.

MCCID College of Technology, in partnership with Bartimaeus Center for Alternative Learning (Bethsaida, Inc.) and Liliane Foundation Philippines will open its first branch in Tiaong, Quezon and will be ready to accept deaf high school graduates starting this school year 2009-2010.

After a series of discussions and viability studies conducted from February to May of this year, the three institutions forged a special agreement to put up a post-secondary school which will offer computer courses similar to the ones being given to Manila campus. MCCID will provide the curriculum, materials and an academic instructor/expert. It also pledged to donate a couple of computer units.

For their part, Bethsaida will provide the venue and prospective deaf students. Their 1,500 sq.m campus is located at 031 Mayo St., Tiaong, Quezon. On the other hand, Liliane Foundation Philippines, their longtime partner institution promised to give scholarship grants to deaf students as well as to fund for other facilities. Liliane provided financial assistance in the purchase of the school’s property.

Officials from Liliane Foundation led by Sis. Agnetia Naval, National Coordinator, Ms. Ma. Theresa Dela Cruz, National Correspondent and Ms. Joan Galamgam, Administrative Staff together with Mr. Jojo Esposa and Mr. Ervin Reyes representing MCCID met with Pastor Benjamin Hugo, Bethsaida Executive Director and Ms. Loida Alvarez, Coordinator at their school last April 8. The group was very pleased that their goal of providing continuing programs for the deaf in Tiaong will be realized. Their school has been offering elementary and high school education to special children in their area for more than a decade. Most of them are hearing impaired. This year alone, they have four deaf high school graduates.

Tiaong is a first class municipality of Quezon with 31 barangays. It is 96 kilometers south east of Manila. The Quezon branch will service areas within Region IV-A which includes the municipalities of San Juan in Batangas, Candelaria, Sariaya and Dolores in Quezon as well as the cities of Lucena and San Pablo in Laguna. Deaf people from these places after graduating from high school will either go to Manila to continue their education, attend a mainstream program in Lucena City or stop schooling. There are a few government special education centers in the region which offer up to middle school program.

Junior Chamber International (Jaycees) Manila Chapter donated part of the amount used to build twelve pieces of animation light boxes during the Turn Over Ceremony held at MCCID College Design Room last February 28, Saturday.

Dubbed “Operation Handog Gamit”, the team was led by their President Mark Steven Ong. This activity was a brainchild of Mr. Andrei L. Dy, Project Chairman together with his teammates Paul L. Sy and Romulo (Jay) R. Ramos Jr. Andrei started coordinating with MCCID last year through emails. He then visited the school in December during its Christmas party and was able to meet the administration and deaf students. He then asked for the school’s requirement that needed immediate assistance.

Sir Remberto Esposa Sr., the school’s president then informed Andrei that MCCID College wants to open a new 2D animation course. This program is very much fitted to the deaf since most of them are artistically inclined and very creative. One of the requirements in offering the training course is the animation light box. So Sir Esposa requested the group to support them in making those light boxes.

Aside from the light boxes, JCI Manila donated five pieces of second-hand color monitors. These will be used to replace some of the broken monitors in the computer room. MCCID College currently has 20 desktop computer units in the laboratory.

Brandstream Inc., the first and only shopper marketing solutions provider in the Philippines donated a check worth Php 10,000 as part of the scholarship grant to a selected indigent deaf student of Manila Christian Computer Institute for the Deaf.

In a simple yet memorable visit to MCCID office last December 19, 2006 Mr. Raymond Acedera, General Manager of Brandstream, Inc. handed over the check as their Christmas gift shared to the foundation.

Mr. Abcede reasoned out that since most companies share corporate give-aways and memorabilias as part of their Christmas activity, he wants their company to make a difference. He likes to share the company’s blessings to a non-government institution that helps persons with disability have a better life through education.

When asked why they selected MCCID as the first recipient of their Christmas gift, he replied that they searched through the Internet and found this web site appealing to them. After a few calls to MCCID’s Registrar, Mrs. Remedios Esposa, they immediately chose the school as their beneficiary.

For her part, the School Registrar was very much grateful for the Christmas blessing the company gave to MCCID. The school promised to include Brandstream, Inc. as one of its Prayer List. MCCID lists down companies, individuals, government and non-government agencies that supported the school’s work of educating the deaf, in its List of Prayer Partners.

Mr. Abcede was accompanied by his associates Ms. Katrina Austria, Ms. Nevy Capistrano and Mr. Mark Capanzana. Brandstream, Inc. is a newly formed company that facilitates a venue for brand expression and help build brands. Visit their official web site at http://www.brandstream.ph to know more about their services.
