“Love, Deaf and The Bible” is this year’s theme given by MCCID Training Director Sir Jojo Esposa Jr. during the 12th Annual Valentine’s Day program held at MCCID Lecture Hall last February 20.

Attended by students, faculty and staff, this fun filled yearly activity gives an opportunity for the school to share God’s principles about love and relationships. Sir Jojo presented a short lecture about his observations on some of the Filipino deaf’s ideas about relationships and what the Bible says.

This year’s activity introduced new games and activities. Aside from that, special gifts were presented to February Birthday Celebrants Ma’am Charmagne Gaspar, MCCID Faculty (February 19) and Ma’am Remedios Esposa, School Registrar (February 13). Lucky McGill Paltep and Jasmine Bundalian won Valentine Dressed Couple while Jennyfer Cahilig received the cash prize of P2,000 for winning the Best Filipino Sign Language Font.

Third year students showed their video presentations entitled “Hot Chick” (Lucky’s Group) and “Saksak, Life Story of Eleazar Fancubit. The second year student is this year’s overall in-charge of the event led by Joanna Teves.

As part of the celebration of it’s 30th year of service to the Filipino Persons With Disabilities, Liliane Foundation Philippines (LFP) together with its partner organizations in the National Capital Region had a field day and photo shoot at Rizal Park and Monument last February 16.

Ten deaf students currently enjoy the scholarship support of LFP with Sir Jojo Esposa Jr. as the assigned Mediator. They are Jepa Kerena Basilio, Mary Grace Anne Caraang, Janine Galao, Richard Gaytos, Jeiel Haguisan-Hidrosollo, Moises Libot, Anne Marielle Madlangbayan, Cristel Manipol, Ariel Quibol and Marlon Salviejo. All of them participated in the photo shoot led by LFP National Coordinator Sis. Agnetia Naval.

The photo-video shoot is part of the footage that will be used for the creation of a 3-minute video greetings that will be presented to the Liliane Fonds Head Office in Netherlands. Expect more worthwhile activities within the coming months.

On its eleventh year, MCCID College opened Sports Fest 2010 in a festive ceremony held at the Lutheran Church Compound in Sta. Mesa, Manila last Saturday, February 6 attended by more than 150 people.

Participating for the first time is the eight-man deaf team of MCCID College Quezon branch headed by their Coordinator Ma’am Loida Alvarez together with Sir Edmond Guzman and Sir Mamerto Cortez. More than 30 former students attended this “invitation only” event, another first in the entire history of this friendly sporting event.

A total of five teams were formed: Blue, Green, Yellow, Red and White (Quezon Branch). Student organizations wore violet t-shirts while the MCCID Faculty used dark green. More than 100 students and alumni will participate in every sports event. All teams will be competing in Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Chess, Dart and Scrabble events every Saturday up to March 27. A cheering exhibition was also held for the second time. Each team showcased their cheerdancing talents. Awarding ceremony will be tentatively held on April 8, 2010. Sir Jerome Marzan, Physical Education Trainor, leads the activities.

Ten deaf students from this year’s graduating class attended the web accessibility seminar conducted by US based Even Grounds Accessibility Consulting held from January 21-22 at the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) ADOC Center in UP Diliman, Quezon City.

Mr. Julius Charles Serrano, Research Director of Even Grounds is the main speaker for the two-day event. He is a visually impaired web researcher and web accessibility evaluator of websites. He also conducted similar seminar in Malaysia.

The seminar aims to enlighten web designers and other participants on the importance of making their sites accessible to everyone including Persons With Disabilities. Barriers such as improper use of color contrasts, fixed fonts, not putting alternative texts on images and non-inclusion of closed captions on videos were discussed in details.

On the first day, the group covered a set of topics regarding web accessibility, and screen readers as well as other assistive technologies. On the second day, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, and the procedures in identifying and solving accessibility issues in websites were tackled. Sir Jojo Esposa Jr., current President of Philippine Web Accessibility Group gave a short overview of the Philippine initiative on web accessibility designs and and its recommendations.

More than 20 participants attended in this seminar. The audience consisted of professors and students of web development subjects and representatives of organizations focused on persons with disabilities. MCCID students who attended are Vincent Adecer, Jasmine Bundalian, Andrew Calaycay Jr., John Rommel Carpio, Irene Dagos, Eleazar Fancubit, Kurt Patrick Galicha, Lucky Mc Gill Paltep, Hazel Ann Sy. and Maricris Siping.

Aside from MCCID College, other participants came from schools and organizations such as Asia Pacific College, Informatics International College, Resources for the Blind Incorporated and University of Sto. Tomas. ATRIEV School for the Blind led by Mr. Rene Orense (ATRIEV’s project officer and web master) and CICT co-sponsored the event. Certificates of Attendance were distributed to all the participants at the end of the second day.

MCCID College is one of those in the forefront in promoting web accessibility in the Philippines. MCCID sponsored and published the first ever book on web accessibility in the Philippines entitled Basic Web Accessibility Guide for Filipinos.

In preparation for their upcoming On-the-Job Training and future employment, the graduating class experienced first hand how to apply for important government documents and credentials needed last January 18 and 20.

All 20 deaf students braced themselves as they meet the challenge of acquiring forms and documents on a government facility. They bravely fell in line, asked for directions, sought assistance and carefully read signs and intructions posted on the walls and billboards. All without the aid of a sign language interpreter.

On the first day, they went to the National Statistics Office in East Avenue, Quezon City. They mainstreamed with regular people in filling up forms, waiting in line, having their names called and answer interviews in order to get their original birth certificates.

After getting their receipts and certificates, next stop was the Social Security System accross the street. They applied for the SSS ID Numbers. Only students living in Quezon City were accommodated. Others who live in various cities applied on the next day. SSS Number is an important credential in applying for jobs.

Third stop was at Quezon City Hall to get their Community Tax Certificates or commonly called “Residence Certificates” for 2009. Nearby was the QC Social Welfare Office. So they were also able to apply for their Persons With Disabilities Special ID.

On the 19th, the students were again challenged to get their National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Clearances. The head office is in their new location at 5th floor of Victory Central Mall in Caloocan City. This was pretty much a challenge for them because their subject teacher (Sir Jojo Esposa) did not allow them to go to the Courtesy/Disabled Persons Lane. They have to experience the same difficult task of getting it as with regular people. So they followed the steps on how to apply based on what they see on big billboards and doing what other people does.

In the afternoon, deaf students living in Manila went to Manila City Hall to get their Residence Certificates and applied for PWD IDs. All throughout the activity, their instructor patiently guided them at a distance.

On the third day, they were able to apply for their PhilHealth cards in Quezon Ave., Quezon City.

Going through these activities strengthen the deaf person’s feeling of independence and giving them a taste of what the real world is experiencing. Also, preparing this before they graduate is important so that they won’t be cramming about it once they are ready for applying for jobs.

This activity is part of their Pre-employment Preparation Subject under Values Education. MCCID has been doing this since 1995.

                          

Praise God! Our prayers have been answered! MCCID College of Technology is now graciously blessed for having acquired a 6,000 square meter (more than 1/2 hectare) of prime property in the cool, rolling hills of Municipality of San Mateo, Province of Rizal. It is situated along the Bgy. Silangan National Road. in Barangay Silangan.

The lush property is near the boundary of Marikina City and San Mateo. It is 13 kms. away from Cubao, Quezon City and 2 kms. away from Marikina City Hall. There is a direct jeepney route from Cubao Terminal to the place via Marikina City. The property is nearly 300 meters above sea level overlooking the Marikina Valley so flooding will not be a problem. Landslides rarely occur because of the land’s very low angle of inclination.

The multi-million peso real estate was brought by MCCID College out of its savings from the school’s operation as well as generous donations coming from the MCCID family, relatives, friends and non-government foundations. As of October 2009, major improvements that have been completed are:

1. The entire property already has a 10-ft high concrete-wall perimeter fence including 2 ft. of barbed wires on top;
2. The street facade is secured with a steel gate and concrete wall.
3. The street lighting was placed in order to provide illumination.

San Mateo, Rizal is a first class urban municipality of Rizal Province. Located on the island of Luzon. It is part of the Metro Luzon Urban Beltway. Metro Luzon is composed of Region 3, Region 4-A (CALABARZON) and the nearby National Capital Region (NCR). San Mateo is located along the western border of Rizal Province, it is bordered on the west by Quezon City, to the south by Marikina City and Antipolo City, the capital of Rizal Province, and to the north by Rodriguez (Montalban) also in Rizal province. It is approximately 24 kilometers away from Manila and 11 kilometers south of Pasig City, the former town capital of Rizal.

MCCID College intends to put up a two-floor school building, a multi-purpose covered court for our sports activities, special dormitories for our students from the provinces, a livelihood training center and an Olympic size swimming pool.

For the past 16 years, MCCID has been renting small building spaces first in Sta. Mesa, Manila and now in Cubao, Quezon City. In spite of that, the school was able to fulfill its mission of providing quality technical education for nearly 250 deaf high school graduates in the Philippines. Majority of them now work in IT related jobs nationwide.

MCCID College continues to aim higher. The institute wants to strengthen its efforts in educating the Filipino Deaf in the field of information technology and widen their career opportunities. The school may not be able to expand its mission by confining itself in a small place. Having its own land is one step in achieving that goal.

But the task does not end there. The school needs additional funding in order to support the construction of its new school building. MCCID College needs to raise at more than Php 5 million so that it can start putting up the structure.

Home Sweet Home

MCCID College students again enjoyed their annual outing-swimming trip before the resumption of classes on January 7. A total of 32 students, alumni and faculty joined in this year’s two-day stay at Golden View Resort III Private Pool in Pansol, Calamba City, Laguna from January 4-5, 2010.

Now on its ninth year, this activity has been a tradition of the school which started in 2002. After a long Christmas vacation and before the start of classes, students created the idea of unwinding and relaxing and at the same time renewing bonds and friendship among fellow students. What better way to do this, than to have an overnight fun and fellowship. Laguna has always been a choice due to its hot pools, comfortable rooms and secured private resorts.

With the goal of spreading cheers to children this Yuletide Season, the MCCID College of Technology decided to hold a Share-A-Toy for Disabled Children of Tiaong, Quezon and Indigent Pupils of Buntong Palay Day Care Center in Silangan, San Mateo, Rizal.

Each MCCID student donated toys for every child assigned to him/her. The school, for its counterpart, gave fruits, chocolates, candies and other expenses. A total of 110 children received toys and other gifts. Two separate deaf student groups were given the opportunity to give the toys.

More than 35 disabled kids received the toys.

For the San Mateo gift-giving program, MCCID Registrar Remedios Esposa, Sir Jojo, Sir Ervin and Owen led the group together with Student Leaders’ Joanna Teves, Jepa Kerena Basilio, Mark Angelo Reyes and the Esposa kids Mariegin, Patricia and Regina Mae distributed the toys and fruits on December 22. Teacher Gina Ballatan of B Palay Day Care Center assisted the group. Over 70 pupils received the toys and fruits.

Ma’am Esposa, School Registrar hoped that this share-a-toy program would be an annual event for MCCID. She thanked and gave blessings to all the students who participated in this activity.

Netherlands based Liliane Foundation Philippines has recently sealed its partnership with MCCID College of Technology by initially providing scholarship grants to ten deaf students.

This was announced during the Annual Christmas Party last December 14 at their Head Office in St. Joseph’s College Compound, Quezon City attended by mediators and representatives of Metro Manila partner organizations. Liliane Philippines National Correspondent Ma. Teresa Dela Cruz awarded the check worth P50,000 as preliminary support for the ten selected deaf students. Each student receives P5,000 to partially provide for their tuition fee payments. Their families are expected to give their counterpart of the fund.

Receiving the check was MCCID Training Director Jojo Esposa Jr. who also serves as Liliane Foundation’s Official Mediator. Sir Jojo, in return, was grateful for the assistance and conveyed the appreciation in behalf of MCCID College Board of Trustees. Liliane promised to continue supporting the school and would soon be collaborating in a project that would provide employment and skills training for the Filipino Deaf.

For her part, Liliane Foundation Philippines National Coordinator Sis. Agnetia Naval congratulated the attendees for successfully reaching the goal of assisting more than 10,000 children with disabilities for 2009. She increased 2010’s goal by 500 to further provide medical, financial, educational and other assistance to disabled kids in the Philippines.

“Lord, here am I, Send me!”, was the main topic of her message as she announced her 50th year in religious service on May 15, 2010. She opined that there are still many children out there who are in need of assistance. She was also equally excited to the partner organizations for their enthusiasm in doing their mandate to help the children of the Lord.

Students, faculty and staff had a merry Christmas celebration party last Saturday, December 19 at MCCID Lecture Hall.

The usual parlor games as well as exchange gifts made this activity truly a fun filled event. All students took turn in presenting their special numbers that made the day memorable and enjoyable. Student Organization Adviser Sir Jerome Marzan led the gift giving program.

Highlight of the event was the announcement of best room decorations. The assigned group followed this year’s theme of “Animals and Christmas”. They must present it without much use of material bought. They have to be creative and use only local and reused items. Sir Jojo together with Sir Ervin presented the cash gifts to the winning groups. They are:

MCCID Training Director Jojo Esposa together with Deaf Coordinator Ervin Reyes and Student Organization President Lucky McGill Paltep were invited to attend the National Human Rights Forum for the formulation of the Second National Human Rights Action Plan (NHRAP) from December 10-11, 2009 at Manila Grand Opera Hotel.

The activity was spearheaded by the Presidential Human Rights Committee in cooperation with Commission on Human Rights Philippines and the United Nations Development Programme. This year’s theme is “Building a Positive and Proactive Culture of Human Rights”. The approved action plan will be implemented from 2010 to 2014.

MCCID College of Technology is one of the organizations selected by the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) to represent the persons with disabilities sector specifically the deaf organizations. NCDA was the lead agency tasked to draft the action plan for the disability sector in line with the Philippines’ ratification of the UN International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD).

The NHRAP Writing Team that drafted the action plan in line with UN CRPD was lead by NCDA Executive Director Geraldine Ruiz together with Ms. Ruth Tacujan, Ms. Cynthia Barriga, Mr. Steve Alcantara, Ms. Flerida Labanon and Mr. Miguel Limon. Covered by the action plan was the inclusion of unhampered access to Information and Communications Technology (ICT) which was partly contributed by MCCID through its Training Director Jojo Esposa during the 1st National Disability Summit held last September 2009.

MCCID College has been one of the forefront in pushing for ICT and Web Accessibility for Persons With Disabilities since 2003 by participating in inter-regional and international workshops as well as organizing web design accessibility workshops and advocating barrier free access to the web through the establishment of the Philippine Web Accessibility Group (PWAG). Mr. Esposa is one of PWAG’s founding members and its current president. MCCID has also included web accessibility in its web design curriculum and training programs.

Highlight of the NHRAP activity was the commitment signing and sustaining Human Rights Mainstreaming Initiatives. Those who signed were UNDP Country Director Renaud Meyer, NEDA Deputy Director General Rolando Tungpalan, CHRP Chairperson Leila De Lima and PHRC Undersecretary Severo Catura. Executive Secretary and PHRC Chairman Eduardo Ermita gave his keynote message. Popular Filipino cultural music icon Joey Ayala was the master of ceremonies.

The participants were given a chance to tour the presentations of each committee who were tasked to draft the action plan based on the eight pillars of human rights. These are Civil and Political Rights, Economic Social and Cultural Rights, Against Torture and Other Inhuman Punishment, Rights of the Child, Discrimination Against Women, Protection of Migrant Workers and their Families, Elimination of All forms of Racial Discrimination and Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Each pillars has a corresponding international conventions and treaties all of which are ratified by the Philippine government.

COMDDAP eXpo 2009

Similar to last year, MCCID students once again visited the annual Computer Manufacturers, Dealers and Distributors Association of the Philippines held at SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Saturday, December 6, 2009.

Dubbed “Maximum EXPOsure”, this year’s COMDDAP Expo 2009 showcases various consumer electronics with special focus on laptops, netbooks and bigger projectors. Many students received various give aways such as ball pens, magazines, bags and other goodies.

They were also given a short lecture on designing 3D structures and buildings which will be placed as permanent fixtures in Google Earth. Google Philippines installed a big flat touch screen which shows Google Earth together with famous Philippine landmarks. Students were delighted to learn how to design a 3D edifice.

The activity was one of the culminating workshops held since September 2008. The Australian Government aims to establish a situational analysis on how government and non-government institutions in the Philippines involved in disability issues are implementing activities to address inclusive development for programs that support Persons With Disabilities. They aim to establish a partnership program through their “Development for All” initiatives with focus on people with disabilities.

Key AusAID officials attended the affair coordinated by Ms. Bernadette Cariaga, Program Officer for Development Cooperation and Focal Person for Disability. With education for people with disabilities as its main agenda, the participants were divided into groups addressing the Philippine educational system. The groups were able to come up with situations and successful programs which answers the following questions:

1. What is working well- examples of practice that are working particularly well in certain contexts?
2. What are the factors present that are contributing to the successful examples given and
3. What are the resources- knowledge, skills, experience, financial, that we have and can make use of?
4. What need to be the future objectives in the short (3 years) to medium (5 years) term?
5. What needs to be done and actions to achieve them- the steps that need to take place, the contributors to the action, the types of resources required?

MCCID College Team joined the Alternative Learning System of Education Situational Analysis for Persons With Disabilities with members led by National Council on Disability Affairs Executive Director Geraldine Ruiz (facilitator), Liliane Foundation Philippines National Correspondent Teresa Dela Cruz, Autism Society of the Philippines Executive Director Ranilo Sorongon, Nova Foundation President Noli Agcaoili and Akap Pinoy Representative Daylin Taleon. The group was able to come up with good practices which addresses employability, self-sustaining, improvement of life, enjoyment of life and productivity. Also present in the workshop is Philippine Federation of the Deaf President Raquel Estiller-Corpuz.

The group was able to coin a new term replacing the Alternative Learning System. They renamed it as “ALTERNATIVE TECHNICAL/PRACTICAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES (ATPLO)“. They agreed that no skill is too high that is unachievable for PWD. Focus on individualized learning abilities of PWDs. Extend reasonable accommodation to upgrade and enhance the qualifications of PWDS as part of advocacy based on UN-CRPD.

In strategizing for ATPLO, the group was able to come up with the following:

1. Device a disability specific assessment tools to be re-adapted for PWD. Look into various skills, learning abilities. (OT, DPOs, OSHD).
2. Must form a technical working group, interdisciplinary group for PWDs in ATPLO. Recommended to TESDA, DEPED, and industry or cross-platform for approval for skills assessment. This is a work in progress.
3. Device a communication system that can be easily assimilated for training and for Human Resource companies. This is used to facilitate learning in ATPLO.
4. Localize the collaboration/networking between NGO-LGUs (case of Laguna ASP Chapter with CP, DS). Empower or devolve these enhancement courses to local Disability Peoples Organization (DPO).
5. Create safeguard measures to protect ideas and to ensure the exclusive rights to products, ideas and services for PWDs.
6. Document and promote successful ATPLO projects for replication or adaptation per LGUs, disability sectors. (Case study: SM-PFRD Coping Seminar)
7. Start ATPLO early on. Focus on transition. Select better option or opportunities, which are technical/practical in nature. Educate parents to give options from traditional education to one responsive to the child’s needs. (ATPLO caters to persons with intellectual disabilities). Campaign to parents of PWD and professionals catering to PWD for options to traditional education.
8. Consortium on best practices between, GO, NGOs, DPOs and professional associations. Encourage more stakeholdership to develop more champions for PWDs using ATPLO.

Basic Education, through support for programs under the Government of Philippines Basic Education Reform Agenda to assist the Philippines to achieve its MDG target for universal primary education. This includes support for school based management, rationalisation of teacher deployments to ensure coverage of remote schools, text book provision and school building construction. Increased support will be provided to improve access to and quality of education for children in disadvantaged and conflict affected areas.

The Digital Filipino Web Awards were given last Friday, November 13 at the Hotel Intercontinental in Makati City. It was part of the Digital E-Commerce Summit, which started in Thursday.

This is the first time that the NCDA site won the award given annually by the DigitalFilipino.com Club whose members judge the nominations from the public in over 40 categories. The official site was designed by MCCID College of Technology. See related story here.

The NCDA site award was received by Mr. Dandy Victa, Assistant Chief of Technical Cooperation Division. MCCID College of Technology Training Director Jojo Esposa Jr., gave the 5-minute overview of the website. He also focused on the promotion of web accessibility.

The websites were reviewed and judged “for their ability to create a noticeable presence on the Internet—their ability to be seen and heard among all the noise and clutter of the Net,” said the award body.

“The DigitalFilipino.com Web Awards aims to advocate the use of Internet and e-commerce for business development, through the identification, promotion and highlighting of best e-commerce practices from various websites in the Philippines,” it said.

Nominations were open from Sept. 19 to Oct. 19.

“Despite the hardships brought about by recent series of calamities, MCCID has many blessings to be thankful for and celebrating our 16th year of existence is truly important.“, thus said the MCCID Training Director Jojo Esposa during the school’s 16th Founding Anniversary last October 30, 2009 at Town and Country Hotel.

As with every year, drama skits and comedy were presented by each year level and section. But this time, the second and third year students showed their talents on a 5-minute video presentation directed by Sir Ervin Reyes. The first year group performed their comedic acts on stage.

One big difference in this year’s celebration was the participation of the MCCID branch in Tiaong, Quezon. They presented their own brand of comedy skit. The MCCID main student body and administrators were thankful for the efforts made by the branch in coming over to Manila in spite of the impending typhoon that might ravage their province in Southern Philippines.

This year is also the first time the school celebrated under a new MCCID College of Technology, Inc. name.

Winners of each presentation received medals and special recognitions. They were judged according to the clarity of their theme, full participation of each member, props and special effects and audience impact. The members of the Board of Judges include Ma’am Loida Alvarez of Tiaong, Ms. Lizette Mabini and Ms. Ma. Liza Plata Batch 2003 Alumni who are both successfully employed for more than five years now. The presentation of second year students will be included in the final grades of their Deaf Culture subject while each comedy skit was evaluated by the judges from among the three selections; “Very Good”, “Good” and “Fair”.

A video presentation of “From Why to How, Accessible ICT” was also presented during the program. The short docu-film was a collaborative efforts of Asia Pacific Development Center on Disability, Japan International Cooperation Agency, National Council on Disability Affairs, Resources for the Blind and MCCID College of Technology. The video showcased the work made by the Philippines in promoting information and communications technology for the disabled persons. Complimentary DVDs were given to attendees for free. The celebration ended with a feast of Filipino dishes with which everybody was completely satisfied.

                          

A total of Php 16,290.00 were distributed to representatives of families of deaf students who were victims of recent floods brought about by Typhoon Ondoy during a simple program held last October 27.

The two-day event focused on the theme “Accessibility and Development for ALL”. It was attended by government and non-government agencies who are the stakeholders of the sector. They were grouped according to Health, Inclusive Economic Development, Education and Accessibility. Key government agencies presented their platforms of concerns and assessed their inadequacies regarding the issues confronting the sector. Among them were from the Department of Health, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Education, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Commission on Higher Education, Department of Public Works and Highways and the Department of Transportation and Communications. All of these agencies seat into the governing board of NCDA.

Sir Jojo was tasked to assist in facilitating the group on accessibility in matters of information and communications technology. He presented the concerns of the sector to the Accessibility group as well as the main plenary session on the last day. He was also assigned to provide an insight of an academe during the closing ceremonies. He stressed the need for full participation of all sectors in discussing issues which concern them, especially those who are with hearing impairment. He also emphasized on the respect of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on matters concerning sign language, inclusive education and deaf community.

NCDA Executive Director Geraldine Ruiz was the event’s overall coordinator. She encouraged all sectors to assist the government in finding ways to respect the law and follow its provisions to the fullest extent with consideration of “reasonable accommodation”. She also addressed the need to discuss and resolve issues of concerns with highlights on the role of PWD organizations and civil society in monitoring the implementation of the UN CRPD.

MCCID Students Organization again celebrated their annual Acquaintance Party held at Town and Country Hotel and Restaurant last Friday, September 18, 2009.

The difference between this party compared with the previous ones is the inclusion of the first batch of students from MCCID College of Technology’s Tiaong, Quezon branch using the school’s community based rehabilitation strategy. All eight students attended together with their Coordinator Ma’am Loida Alvarez and MCCID Trainor Sir Edmond Guzman Jr.

All year levels were introduced including the Tiaong branch. Oath taking of Batch 2009 Student Officers, dance contest from three year levels, giving out of raffle prizes took place.

Students who shined during the party were voted by MCCID faculty and their peers. The winners received trophies, sashes and special cash prizes. Nearly 120 students, alumni, faculty and staff attended the event.

MCCID College Trainor Sir Edmond Guzman Jr. of Tiaong, Quezon and MCCID Training Director Jojo Esposa Jr. attended the ten-day Regional Workshop on Accessible Web-based Information Networking in Bangkok, Thailand sponsored by the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) from September 1 – 11, 2009.

Aside from the two, three other members from the Philippine Team include Mr. Dandy Victa and Mr. Reginaldo Tolentino of Technical Cooperation Division of the National Council on Disability Affairs and Ms. Marlene Mariano from Association of PWDs in Makati City. The team were the largest delegation.

APCD associate organizations from Asian countries like Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand also participated in the workshop. All expenses were paid by the organizers.

During the workshop, the participants were able to understand the concept of information accessibility for PWDs, UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Disability Equality, Concept Information Accessibility for PWDs, Concept of Information Networking,
Assistive Devices for Information Accessibility and Information Networking (Disability Focus).

Hands-on training on Joomla Content Management System with focus on W3C/ WAI on different disability (visual, hearing, learning, etc), Accessible Content by CMS were also conducted. Each participant was able to create their own dummy websites which were presented and evaluated by APCD and NECTEC resource persons.

Web Accessibility Initiative Results Among Asian Countries

One highlight of the event was the NECTEC presentation where the Philippines showed a strong performance among Asian countries and fared well even from other developed countries. This was according to a study made by the University of Worshester Faculty of Computing, UK in 2007. The study was based on the Global E-government Web Accessibility, an Empirical Examination among EU, Asian and African Sites by Ms. Joanne Kuzma.

                          

The activity was spearheaded by the National Council on Disability Affairs, the Christian Blind Mission and Liliane Foundation Philippines. It was attended by various government and non-government organizations that offer CBR programs and strategies within their communities. Ms. Teresa Dela Cruz, LFP National Correspondent was one of the co-emcees.

The two-day event aims to harmonize all the sectors of Persons With Disabilities in promoting community activities with focus on inclusive education approach. MCCID already started its CBR strategy this year by opening up its first branch in Tiaong, Quezon in partnership with Liliane Foundation Philippines and Bethsaida, Inc.
