Monde Nissin hosts introduce "Shaping a Heart to Serve" Program

In a special Christmas Thanksgiving Party for institutional partners held last December 14, MCCID College was introduced together with other well-known universities in the country. Monde Nissin hosts informed the rest of the participants about the successful program they conducted in partnership with MCCID like sign language training and the hiring of deaf graduates in their production units. MCCID is the only institutional partner which caters to Persons With Disabilities.

Also in this event, Monde Nissin launched its “Shaping a Heart to Serve: Thanksgiving and Learning Session” program. Well-known Christian Pastor and motivator LA Mumar gave an encouraging lecture on the importance of using your God-given talent to serve other people. Under the program, Monde Nissin will conduct whole-day Work Behavioral program to partner schools. MCCID plans to avail of this service this school year. Monde Nissin also disclosed that after upgrading three MCCID deaf into regular positions in 2011, they will again hire 2nd batch of deaf workers this 2012.

Probably the first of its kind, the Philippines will now have its first deaf animators as seven MCCID deaf alumni including Deaf Coordinator Ervin Reyes passed the pre-qualification examination given by Take One Animation Studio last November 3.

Eric Tansingco, company’s proprietor/manager, offered the opportunity for free to the deaf as part of his advocacy in providing jobs for less fortunate youth. This time, he wants to give chance to Persons With Disabilities to work for his future projects.

Now on its eleventh year, Take One Animation Studio specializes in 2D animation services for traditional Japanese and Western (Disney-type) animation. They also conduct 2D and 3D animation trainings and workshops. Among their hugely successful projects include Onepiece, DragonballZ, Precure, Flying Trapeeze and Mari & Gali. They also do clean-up and in-betweening works for TOEI Animation Philippines, the only subsidiary company outside Japan.

All seven deaf started their rigid training last November 7 and is expected to complete the modules within a month. Daily and weekly evaluation will then be given to them.

Sir Eric hopes to fill up 80% of the slot coming from Persons With Disabilities. Based on his initial observation, he sees a great potential for deaf 2D Animators. Evaluation will again be given to the first batch, after which, they will be automatically hired to work as In-betweeners and assistant 2D Animators.

MCCID College of Technology celebrated its 18th year of existence last October 14, 2011.

Dubbed “MCCID College at 18″, this is the first time the school’s anniversary was held in a new place, Luyong Restaurant in Marikina City. Among its other first is that all three campuses, MCCID College Main Campus in San Mateo, MCCID College Pampanga and MCCID College in Quezon participated.

As part of this year’s celebration of White Cane Safety Week, a half-day web accessibility forum was held anew last August 2 at Occupational Safety and Health Center Training Room in Quezon City.

Julius Charles Serrano, a web accessibility advocate and PWAG representative gave his insights on user experience in accessing government websites. He also explained some accessibility barriers met by a Person With Disability in getting content from websites.

For his part, MCCID Training Director and Philippine Web Accessibility Group President Jojo Esposa elaborated on the topic by introducing ICT as well as discussing international and local laws/circulars pertaining to equal access to the web. NCDA Chief Nelia De Jesus challenged the participants to do their share by adhering to the call of making their sites accessible to everyone.

Sponsored by the National Council on Disability Affairs-White Cane Safety Week Organizers and the National Computer Center, this forum was participated in by web developers and representatives from various national government units as well as key stakeholders.

The newly-built home of MCCID College of Technology got the first taste of media mileage when it was used as a scene for GMA-7′s TV Documentary “I Juander”.

The first in a series of Health Camps sponsored by Liliane Foundation Philippines to MCCID Pampanga Deaf students was held at Brothers of Charity Formation House in Baguio City from may 20-21, 2011.

It’s main purpose is in order to strengthen their awareness on reproductive health, responsibility and self-esteem. Among the facilitators include Sir Jojo Esposa and Sir Jerome Marzan of MCCID, Mr. Aga of Catholic Ministry to the Deaf People, Ms. Zeny Guevarra of Akapin Bulacan and Ms. Veronica Mendoza of Liliane Foundation Philippines.

A General Assembly of both hearing and deaf sign language interpreters was successfully held last Saturday, May 21 at CAP Development Center in Makati City and attended by more than 100 interpreters and supporters.

This momentous activity was brought about by the inclusion of World Association of Sign Language Interpreters Asia Forum (WASLI) during the Asia Pacific Conference of World Federation of the Deaf held in the Tagaytay City, Philippines last November 2010 which was sponsored by Philippine Federation of the Deaf. During the forum, a group of Filipino sign language interpreter attendees brainstormed and decided to form a national sign language interpreters association in order to address the concerns raised. After that, a general get-together discussion was held at the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) on January 24 to introduce the idea of forming a said group.

After existing for nearly eighteen years, MCCID has finally found its new and permanent home.

In a Special Dedication Service held last March 29, exactly one year after the first building materials were delivered and laid the foundation, MCCID President Remberto C. Esposa praised God for the abundant blessings He has given to the school. He also thanked and congratulated the workers, administration, faculty, staff and students for supporting and praying for the construction of the new school building.

“For the past eighteen years, we have been dreaming of having our own home. We have been renting our place from Sta. Mesa in Manila to Cubao in Quezon City. We are always at the mercy of building owners. But now, God has answered our prayers by giving us our Israel.”, Sir Esposa exclaimed.

Seated on a 6,000 square meter property in San Mateo in Rizal Province, an 800 square meter school building was carved out of nearly 10 meters below the mountain. The school site is along the Silangan Barangay Road near the boundary of San Mateo and Marikina City. The place is a one hour straight jeep ride from Cubao, Quezon City.

“With frugal financial spending and assistance from generous sponsors, we were able to acquire the lot and construct the school building.”, Esposa added. He also enumerated the future plans for the school which includes:

• Construction of Competition Swimming Pool and a Multi-Purpose Covered Court;
• Adding courses in Hotel and Restaurant Management with the construction of a training building;
• Cottages and mini-hostel for stay-in or transient guests and students;
• Establishing special business opportunities for deaf entrepreneurs in Information Technology (IT) by putting up of outsourcing, designing and other related fields.

According to him, this time, students would expect an even better and more quality training because of better and bigger facilities and a highly skilled teachers in their respective areas especially in IT.

MCCID conducted sign language training to administration and staff of St. Camillus Hospital in Calbayog City, Western Samar last April 20.

A total of twenty participants attended led by Hospital Director Fr. Jaime Roa, Phd and Mr. Rey Demit. The one-day sign language training was done in order to equip them when they meet deaf patients.

MCCID will now design a hospital website.

Sir Jerome Marzan, MCCID Deaf Trainor was tasked to develop the Official Website of St. Camillus Hospital in Calbayog City, Western Samar for a fee. The site must showcase the programs and services of the hospital.

Bethsaida/Bartimaeus Center for Alternative Learning in Tiaong, Quezon held its Graduation and Recognition Program last April 5, 2011 with MCCID’s Sir Jerome Marzan as special guest and gave his inspirational message. MCCID is a partner of Bartimaeus Center since 2009.

A total of five high school graduates attended. Other graduates include elementary students and those from their Community Based Rehabilitation program in far-flung barangays and districts.

Sir Jerome emphasizes the importance of studying harder and aiming for success in life even if people cannot hear. He also reminded the deaf that if they put their mind into it, they can get their dreams.

The Human Resource Department Team composed of Ms. Nilda Villa and Ms. Lara Bombasey conducted preliminary evaluation to MCCID alumni last March 11, 2011 at the new MCCID building in San Mateo, Rizal. Four out of twelve applicants were accepted. These were Irene Dagos, Andrew Calaycay Jr., Crystal Gayle Sayon and Kristianne Rose Javier.

Subsequent evaluations were made at Monde Nissin Plant Office in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna. Additional passers were Kristel Daine Orteza, Abegail Brazil, Edward Romasanta,John Paul De Ocampo and Donna Vee Diwa bringing a total of ten.

The deaf are expected to start their work in May, 2011 after completing their job requirements.

Monde Nissin Corporation, makers of hugely popular “Lucky Me Noodles” and “Fita Biscuit” invited MCCID to conduct a one-day Conversational Sign Language training to their staff and employees at their main plant in Balibago Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.

Due to the large number of participants, the trainings were divided into two batches. The first batch was held in February 22 where Sir Jojo Esposa was accompanied by Sir Jerome Marzan and Irene Dagos. Around 25 workers and staff attended the first day.

The second batch was held in February 28. This time Sir Jojo was accompanied by MCCID Students’ Joanna Teves and Moises Libot. More than 40 employees participated.

The training was aimed to equip the employees and staff on how to handle future deaf co-employees.

Also included in the interview hosted by Suzie Abrera and Regine Tolentino was Deaf Indie Actor Romalito Mallari together with Ms. Joi Villareal as her sign language interpreter.

MCCID Training Director attended the hearing as part of the government agency in charge of telecommunications group headed by National Computer Center's Mercy Nicolas and National Telecommunications Commission's Edgardo Cabarios.

Sir Jojo points out some loopholes in the bills and requests for the changes in their contents.

The entire MCCID student population trooped to the House of Representatives building to attend the House Committee on Social Services last January 24, 2011 to support the two house bills on telecommunication services for the deaf.

MCCID was part of the government group which includes the National Computer Center, National Telecommunications Commission and the National Council on Disability Affairs.

The two house bills were discussed in the committee hearings. These are House Bill No. 1681 or “An Act Providing Telecommunications Systems Accessibility to the Hearing-Impaired and Speech-Impaired” authored by Rep. Rufus Rodriguez and House Bill No. 2955 or “An Act Providing Hearing-Impaired and Speech-Impaired Persons Access to Telecommunication system” authored by Rep. Marcelino Teodoro.

For his part, MCCID Training Director Jojo Esposa proposed that instead of pushing for this bill, a study must be made to upgrade its content to include the latest technology. He demonstrated to the house the use of 3G technology in video calls. He only requests the congress to require major telecommunication companies to lower the cost of their services.

A Technical Working Group was put up in order to study the enhancement of the said two bills.
