Opening of Classes Started Smoothly

Meeting with the Parents also Held

Maam Esposa explains something with the parents.

Classes for First Semester under School Year 2008-2009 opened smoothly last June 16. An orientation of rules, procedures, curriculum, calendar of activities and other concerns was held for first year students in the morning while a refresher one was given to the second and third year classes.

Aside from the orientation, the "Peace Agreement" was explained and signed by the students. A total of 83 students are currently enrolled this semester. They are broken down as follows: 28 - First Year, 26 - Second Year and 26 - Third Year and 3 from Sign Language course.

Also, last Saturday, July 5, the annual "Meeting with the Parents" were held in the afternoon where parents/guardians of freshmen were invited. Out of the 28 parents who were expected to attend, 22 participated. The activity is basically the same as orientation with students although most of the program focused on the question and answer portion. Most of the parents were interested to know about MCCID's program, method of training the Deaf and successes made by the school during its nearly 15 years of existence.

10th Commencement Exercises Held

"A Tribute to Parents" is this year's theme

A truly memorable ocassion greeted the parents and relatives of the Batch 2008 graduates when they celebrated MCCID's Tenth Commencement Exercises held at Town and Country Hotel and Restaurant last May 21, 2008.

Graduates 2008 pose with Administration and Faculty

Dubbed, "A Tribute to the Parents", thirty six students who finished the academic requirements marched on the stage accompanied by their proud parents. This year's celebration was different from previous programs held. There were no invited special guest lecturers unlike before when the school invites politicians, church leaders and government officials. The stars of the show are the graduates' parents who did a very difficult job of raising their child despite great odds in coping with their disabilities.

Sir Jojo introduces MCCID Faculty to the audience.

Selected parents led by Mr. Florencio B. Rañola Jr. (Ma. Ivy Rañola’s Father) and Mrs. Neonita U. Matias (Pia Joy Matias’ Mother) gave special and inspiring messages for their co-parents and the graduating class. For their part, the students made very special gifts and presented them to their parents including some tokens from the school. More than 140 people attended the affair.

Twenty one candidates from Batch 2007-2008 were joined by fifteen graduates of class 2006-2007 because there was no commencement exercises held in 2007.

More than 50 students and faculty of MCCID attended this successful, historic and landmark Prayer and Walk for Unity and Global Celebration of Entry into Force of Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities held at SM Mall of Asia last May 12.

An estimated crowd of two thousand Persons with Disabilities and their supporters representing more than 100 organizations participated in this rally. Together with the Philippine Federation of the Deaf, MCCID is the only school in the country that represented the Deaf Sector in this event.

Crowd at Rally

The program started with a celebration of a mass. Then, a march within the vicinity of Mall of Asia was held. After that, series of speeches and special numbers were rendered by special guests and representatives from the sector. Secretary Alberto Romulo of the Department of Foreign Affairs was the highest leader of the government that attended and gave the congratulatory message.

Afterwards, a selected group of PWD leaders and the government sector led by the National Council on Disability Affairs went to Malacanang Palace and handed over the Manifesto of Commitment and Joint congratulatory message to Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for giving passage to the convention.

To know about the overview ot The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as the first legally binding international instrument to adopt a “rights-based” approach to disability, please visit this link from withnews.org website that made an extensive coverage of the affair.

Prayer and Walk for Unity for UN-CRPD Ratification to be held on May 12

Disability Symbol with Smily

After six years of deliberation and almost a year after its signing, the Philippines became the 23rd country that ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

This landmark event will have a simultaneous worldwide celebration on May 12, 2008 at UN Headquarters in New York City. For its part, the Philippines will also have a prayer and walk for unity on May 12 from 7:00 am - 12:00 pm at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. Autism Society of the Philippines President, Erlinda Koe, was adjudged to be the emcee of the unity walk. Captain Oscar Taleon will be the in-charge of events security and together with Lauro Purcil, he will help for a courtesy call with Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary, Alberto Romulo. Sorongon will also help in security marshals. The organizers will also invite the SM Bands to add color and music to the walk. Carmen Zubiaga and Joy Garcia will make a miniature of wheelchair as a token for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. A program will also be held at Worshops and symposium will also be scheduled after the grand celebration.

We invite everyone to come and support this activity. MCCID is one with the PWD community in celebrating this momentous ocassion. We encourage our fellow web designers, bloggers, members of the media, academe and their friends to share this news and promote this activity.

3rd Web Accessibility Workshop Held

Awarding of Certificates at NCDA Office

Students make 143 sign with Dir Matt Lee, Ma'am Nelia and MCCID faculty.

Twenty four students representing the graduating batch and 22 second year class participated in the yearly seminar-workshop on Web Accessibility held last April 2 and 3 conducted by Sir Jojo I. Esposa Jr. and Sir Ervin R. Reyes at MCCID Lecture Hall.

NCDA officials present the certificate of participation. Villaflor explains about the accessibility features of the CCBC Deaf Ministry site.

The students will then use the lessons they acquired for the web sites that they will create this summer. They are already scheduled to design working websites for six non-government institutions and two e-commerce sites of deaf entrepreneurs.

Students pose for photo op after the two-day workshop.

Then last April 14, the graduating class presented their finished work to the officials and staff of National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA formerly NCWDP) led by Deputy Executive Director Mateo Lee and Technical Cooperation Center Chief Ms. Nelia De Jesus. Certificates were given to the successful participants with no less than NCDA Chairperson Mrs. Lovely Rosie Romulo attached her signature. She also paid for the snacks for all the students and NCDA staff.

After learning from the seminar-workshop attended by MCCID in 2004 at Tagaytay City, the school incorporated web accessibility on the www.mccid.edu.ph and at the same time include accessibility features in the websites that they will create for free to their selected institutions. The book "Basic Web Accessibility Guide for Filipinos" authored by Sir Jojo was the main resource material used. Selected websites that passed the evaluation of Philippine Web Accessibility Group was also presented as samples.

As part of their Office Visit subject, the 3rd year graduating class is required to tour different factories and offices that are related to information technology and those that employ deaf people.

Students observe how a live TV newscast is done.

This school year, they were able to visit ten companies. Among them are GMA-7, Lamoiyan Corporation, National Computer Center, Lucky Me Factory and Malacanang Palace. Two of MCCID alumni work at Lamoiyan, makers of Hapee toothpaste while Emilie Padullon has been with Malacanang Palace since 1991.

"Office Visits" is one of the important subjects in students' curriculum. Its main objective is for them to experience first-hand how a particular company operates and what work environment surrounds a deaf person. Aside from that, they may have an opportunity to be accepted by those companies that they visited.
