Batch 2009 - 2010 Graduates

A truly memorable occasion greeted the parents and relatives of the Batch 2010 and 2009 graduates when they celebrated MCCID’s Eleventh Commencement Exercises held at Town and Country Hotel and Restaurant last May 21, 2010.

Dubbed, “A Tribute to the Parents”, thirty seven students who finished the academic requirements marched on the stage accompanied by their proud parents. This year’s celebration was similar from the graduation program held in 2008. There were no invited special guest lecturers unlike before when the school invites politicians, church leaders and government officials. The stars of the show are the graduates’ parents who did a very difficult job of raising their child despite great odds in coping with their disabilities.

What’s unique in this program is recognizing the successes of MCCID Batch 2005 Alumnus Aldrin Gabriel. The school awarded him the Most Outstanding Alumnus of the Decade and the President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Academic Excellence Award. He is the first recipient of such award in the school’s history. A tribute was also given to him.

Among Gabriel’s achievements include “Most Outstanding TESDA Scholar in 2004″, “Most Outstanding Employee of Malabon City Hall in 2007″, “4th Place – English Desktop Publishing Contest in International Skills Competition in Shizuoka, Japan”, “Gold Medal of Excellence during the 12th Philippine National Skills Competition” and “2005 Asia-Pacific Young Professional for Academic Excellence for the Disabled Sector given by National Consumer Affairs Foundation”. Aldrin was a high school Valedictorian of Bible Institute for the Deaf and a Salutatorian of Diploma in Arts and Computer Design Technology of MCCID in 2005.

Twenty one candidates from Batch 2009-2010 were joined by fifteen graduates of class 2008-2009 because there was no commencement exercises held in 2009.

The Japanese International Abilympics Organization, the group in charge of holding worldwide skills competition, recently gave cash grants amounting to ¥480,000 equally distributed to participants of the 7th International Skills Competition held at Shizuoka, Japan last November 2007.

In a simple ceremony and reunion that took place at TESDA Women’s Center last October 9, the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) led by its chairperson Ms. Rosie Lovely Romulo awarded the cash grant to the delegates in behalf of the Japanese organization. The awardees include MCCID team composed of Aldrin Gabriel (English Desktop Processing and Pottery competitor), Dianne Barcelona (English Text Processing Competitor) and Glenn Ortega (Web Page Design competitor).

Other participants who received the cash rewards are Amelito Regalado (Painting competitor), John Lester Belicano (Floral Arrangement competitor), Minerva Cuevas (Dressmaking competitor), Alnoe Paler (Photography competitor) and Cristina Ignacio (Embroidery competitor). Two competitors from Baguio City and Mindanao were not able to attend because of lack of funds to support their travel expenses in going to Manila. Among the group, only Minerva and the two absentees are non-deaf. All the competitors received Php17,900 each.

Other official who graced the affair and gave their congratulatory messages are Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Region III Director Marta Hernandez and one of the pioneers in advancing the cause of PWD in skills training, TESDA Deputy Director-General Pastor Z. Guiao, NCDA Assistant Secretary and Abilympics Philippines Representative Nora C. Salazar and a representative of Gokongwei Brothers Foundation Director Philip Torres.

Aside from the participants, other members of Philippine team who congratulated the group include Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region IV-A Director Honorita Bayudan (Dressmaking coach), Ms. Floree Bisco and Ruth Tacujan of NCDA (Pottery and Other Trade Coaches), Ms. Edna Paraiso of Philippine School for the Deaf (Floral and Embroidery Coach), Mr. Philip Torres (Photography Coach) and MCCID Training Director Jojo Esposa (Web Page, English Text and English Desktop processing coach). They also received certificates of recognition for coaching the competitors. Ma’am Edna and Sir Jojo were the event’s sign language interpreters.

The result of the competition were dismal based on previous competitions with only Aldrin Gabriel of English Desktop Processing managed to receive a 4th place standing. Philippine organizers and participants commented that the main causes of the poor showing of the Philippines were: (1) preparation was too short and (2) much needed support especially from TESDA, the government agency tasked to provide adequate training for the participants were not given. They hoped that these problems be ironed out in time for the 8th International Abilympics Skills Competition which will be held in 2011 in South Korea.

Alnoe Paler gave his response to the presenting of grant. He prepared a special Powerpoint presentation of the Japan activity. He said,

“We showed the world that we Filipino Persons with Disabilities are talented, plays fair and have the spirit of sportsmanship. Yes I believe we brought pride to our country. Not winning any medal doesn’t mean we weren’t successful in what we were tasked to do. We brought home with us many memorable experiences, rich friendship, among us Filipinos and people from abroad. We earned the respect from other countries.

Ms. Cecille Olfindo of TESDA emceed the activity. The event was capped by free lunch and Reunion Chikahan. Ma’am Nelia De Jesus, NCDA Technical Cooperation Chief was the overall coordinator. She is also the organizing official of the Abilympics Philippines and in charge of the whole staging of the activity from preparation to Japan up to the requesting and acceptance of cash grant. The whole Philippine delegation congratulated her and appreciated her efforts for a job well done. The event also coincided with her birthday so she treated all the competitors in a nearby fastfood chain after the activity.

The Philippine delegation led by National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons Executive Director Atty. Dulfie Shalim and Abilympics Philippines representative Nelia De Jesus participated in the 7th International Abilympics Skills Competition held at Shizuoka, Japan from November 13 – 19, 2007.

A total of 11 persons with disabilities who won during the 12 Philippine National Skills Competition including MCCID alumni Dianne Barcelona, Aldrin Gabriel and Glenn Ortega. They did their best in competing against champions from 29 countries. Sir Jojo Esposa was among the coaches and the official sign language interpreter.

Eventhough no one was able to bring home medals, it was a learning experience from the group. However, unofficially, only Aldrin Gabriel received the highest rank among the group (4th place) in English Desktop Publishing contest. This was according to the Filipino judge, Engr. Jeanette Reyes. Ms. Reyes is the TESDA representative of the group.

However, issues were raised during the post-assessment of the event in comparison with previous competitions where the Philippines participated. Among them were the inclusion of Japanese as head judges in all competitions, non-display of finished products after the contest and the non-posting of complete rankings of all the competitors. The group hopes that these concerns will be resolved on the next skills competition to be held in Seoul, South Korea in September 2011.

MCCID alumni Aldrin D. Gabriel and Ronald Josef Santiago had been awarded the “Gawad ng Pagpapahalaga” (Award of Recognition) by Kalipunan ng mga Samahan sa Malabon during the Gintong Parangal Awards Night held at the City Hall last September 8, 2007.

This recognition was given to Gabriel and Santiago as an expression of pride and honor for the City of Malabon. They were able to contribute excellence in their profession despite their disabilities and has attained a greater and productive well being.

Malabon City Mayor Canuto Oreta personally handed the awards to them. Senator Loren Legarda was the special guest speaker. Aldrin and Ronald, MCCID batch 2005 graduates are currently working at the Management Information Systems Division of City Hall since 2006.

A total of five top Gold Medals of Excellence were received by the National Capital Region. Included are the coach-interpreters (Sir Jojo and Ma'am Imelda Pedro of PSD), TESDA and NCWDP Officials.

From the five gold medalist who won in the NCR Abilympics Skills Competition just two weeks before, four of them successfully beaten their competitors from 12 different regions in the Philippines. They each received Gold Medals of Excellence from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the government agency mandated to undertake such events. The winners are as follows:

The 1st placers will represent the Philippines in the 7th International Abilympics Skills Competition at Shizuoka, Japan in 2007. The Philippine National Skills Competition is held every two years. The regular participants will first compete in ASEAN Skills Competition which will be held in Brunei, 2006. Afterwards, they will compete in the World Skills Competition which is held every two years. This time, it will be held simultaneously in Shizuoka, Japan. The International Abilympics Skills Competition is held every four years.

As part of the fulfillment in their requirement for completing the course, the graduating class of School Year 2005-2006 is assigned to a web page to various institutions for the deaf free of charge.

This is the first time MCCID gave this project to its class. Thirty students were divided into six groups. Each team have their own leaders and are all supervised by their adviser, the bronze medalist in Web Page design during the 2003 Abilympics Skills Competition Sir Ervin R. Reyes.

The following institutions together with their assigned deaf leaders are:

The groups started making contacts with prospective organizations and is expected to finish the designs by April 2005 in time for the awarding ceremony which will be held sometime in May coinciding with their commencement exercises. A total of eleven medals were brought home by all the faculty, staff and students of MCCID during the 2nd National Capital Region-Abilympics Skills Competition held at three separate venues from November 21 – 24, 2005.

Each deaf student was represented by the particular Local Government Unit which is responsible for the materials, allowances and equipment needed. Here are the winners:

The gold medalists will compete for the 12th Philippine National Skills Competition on December 6 – 7, 2005 at Mapua IT Center and Robinson’s Place, EDSA. Hopefully, the winners will represent the Philippines in the 7th International Abilympics Skills Competition at Shizuoka, Japan in 2007.

The NCR Skills Competition is a joint activity of the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP), Department of Social Welfare and Development – NCR (DSWD), Local Government Units, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) as well as Soroptimist Society of Makati City.

During the Opening Program and Day 1 competition held at Club Filipino, Aquarius R. Balisi competed in Painting and Emil Zion Punzalan for photography. On Day 2 competition held at the Mabini Hall of Quezon Memorial Circle, Oscar Purificacion joined in Poster Designing and Joseph Asuncion in Cabinet Making. The third day saw most of the competitors in Information technology competed at the University of Makati.

In recognition of their performance in the field of technical-vocational education for the deaf, MCCID’s top deaf student as well as foundation’s Training Director were recently awarded by the National Consumer Affairs Foundation.

Aldrin D. Gabriel, MCCID Student Organization President and consistent class topnotcher was the recipient of the “2005 Asia-Pacific Young Professional for Academic Excellence for the Disabled Sector” category. The ceremony was held at the AFP Theatre in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City last June 9, 2005.

On the other hand, MCCID Training Director, Sir Jojo I. Esposa Jr. was the 2005 People’s Choice Awardee in the field of Education. This was awarded to “Outstanding Filipino Achievers” aged 40 and below from entertainment business, public service, education, sports and other major professional fields of endeavor. The ceremony was also held at the AFP Theatre, last September 29, 2005.

Aldrin Gabriel was chosen to receive this award due to his exemplary achievement as a TESDA scholar in the National Capital Region in 2004 beating other students from different schools in Metro Manila. He will also represent MCCID in the NCR-Abilympics Skills competition to be held this November, 2005.

As the founder and president of Manila Christian Computer Institute for the Deaf Foundation, Inc., Sir Jojo, as his deaf students fondly call him, started to develop his love for the deaf and sign language at an early age of 21. At 27, he established an institute that would help the deaf enhance their skills in computers and will eventually become productive citizens of the country.

Now on it’s 11th year, the Asia-Pacific Excellence Awards and 23rd National Consumers Quality and Peoples’ Choice Awards are being given as tribute to outstanding companies, products and individuals who made significant accomplishments. The National Consumer Affairs Foundation (NCAF) headed by civic leader-journalist & PR Specialist JONATHAN “JAKE” NAVEA was responsible for successfully initiating and popularizing major family and consumer-related events in the Philippines and Asia-Pacific Region such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Family Week, Grandparents Day, Consumers Welfare Month Celebration, Asia-Pacific Week and Children’s Month since 1980.
