Philippine Presentation wows Indo-ASEAN Delegates

Achievements

Organizers and delegates of the Indo-ASEAN Seminar on “Shruti Drishti” held at Pune, India from January 18 – 19, 2007 were very much impressed by the country presentation and active participation of the Philippine delegation. The Philippines was represented by participants from the government’s Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) led by Ms. Nieva S. Neri, Information Technology Officer of National Computer Center-CICT, Ms. Maria Leanna Alvero Beltran, Content Development Coordinator of CICT and Mr. Remberto I. Esposa Jr., one of the administrators of Philippine Web Accessibility Group (PWAG) and MCCID Training Director.

Training Director Lectures on Accessible ICT while Deaf Coordinator Explains about MCCID

Mr. Jojo Esposa Jr. and Mr. Ervin Reyes formed part of the resource persons during the “Focal Persons’ Workshop on Accessible ICT” held at Summer Place Hotel, Baguio City from February 19 – 23, 2007. Attended by 32 regional focal persons and their IT counterparts from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the workshop focuses on the importance of information and communications technology and the removal of barriers making it accessible to everyone including persons with disabilities. Jojo Esposa lectured on “What is Accessible ICT?”, Ervin Reyes of MCCID, clarified the deaf friendliness of computers while Gimar Aguillon, deaf webmaster of Nova Foundation and MCCID alumnus proved that disability is not a hindrance in getting the right job.

MCCID Director is First President of Philippine Web Accessibility Group

Sir Jojo Esposa became the first president of the newly registered Philippine Web Accessibility Group, Incorporated. The non-stock, non-profit group, which now has an e-group member of 121, has been registered at the Securities and Exchange Commission last May 17, 2007. Also included in the Board of Trustees are Ervin Reyes and Gimar Aguillon.

MCCID Director Authors “Basic Web Accessibility Guide for Filipinos” Book

The 102-page book “Web Accessibility Guide for Filipinos” is now officially written, published, and copyrighted by MCCID Training Director, Sir Jojo I. Esposa. The book contains definitions of web accessibility, types of assistive devices available, laws affecting disability in the Philippines, statistics of Filipino PWDs, and Filipino Internet user statistics. It also details the history of web accessibility initiatives in the Philippines from 2003 up to the present.

MCCID Champions Participate in 7th International Skills Competition with Aldrin Gabriel Receiving 4th Place

Achievements

The Philippine delegation led by the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons and Abilympics Philippines representative participated in the 7th International Abilympics Skills Competition held at Shizuoka, Japan from November 13 – 19, 2007. A total of 11 persons with disabilities who won during the 12 Philippine National Skills Competition including MCCID alumni Dianne Barcelona, Aldrin Gabriel, and Glenn Ortega did their best in competing against champions from 28 countries. Sir Jojo Esposa was among the coaches and the official sign language interpreter.

Although unofficially, only Aldrin Gabriel received the highest rank among the group (4th place) in English Desktop Publishing contest. Sir Jojo was the coach and interpreter for the deaf competitors.

Malabon City Mayor Awards MCCID Alumni

MCCID alumni Aldrin D. Gabriel and Ronald Josef Santiago had been recently awarded the “Gawad ng Pagpapahalaga” (Award of Recognition) by Kalipunan ng mga Samahan sa Malabon during the Gintong Parangal Awards Night held at the City Hall. This recognition was given to Gabriel and Santiago as an expression of pride and honor for the City of Malabon. They were able to contribute excellence in their profession despite their disabilities and have attained a greater and productive well-being. Malabon City Mayor Canuto Oreta personally handed the awards to them.

Coolaire, DFA Hire MCCID Graduates

Coolaire Consolidated, Inc. a multinational company based in Quezon City known for being the best in the fire protection and refrigeration industry in the Philippines has recently hired MCCID alumnus Marlon Dela Torre. Also, three deaf graduates Renato Moran Jr., Ma. Teresa Vicente and Rona May Delos Reyes were also recently hired on a contractual basis by the Department of Foreign Affairs through the assistance of Nova Foundation for the Differently Abled, Inc. They all work as office clerks/assistants.

MCCID Participates in Disability Programs

MCCID participated in the 29th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Program of the Quezon City Government held last July 21 at QC Hall Covered Walk. Selected MCCID students presented a sign language and dance program while Sir Jojo gave a short lecture/introduction about the school. Also, as part of the 29th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week, MCCID was again invited to perform in the “Disability Consciousness Week Program” held at SM Megamall Ground Floor last July 23 at 2:00 pm. This yearly event sponsored by SM Foundation was headed by the Alay sa May Mga Kapansanan Association, Inc. MCCID selected students also performed during the event. Sir Jojo Esposa was also interviewed about the nature of deafness as a disability.

MCCID Online Celebrates its 10th Year

For the past ten years, MCCID Online has informed the world about the activities of the Filipino Deaf and their activities. A number of international institutions were able to access Philippine-based organizations and foundations for the deaf including the Summer Institute of Linguistics and World Games for the Deaf.

The MCCID WebMail was made stronger with its partnership with GMail from the largest Internet company in the world, Google. This free service offered by Google is intended for schools and universities who would want to avail of Google Apps Education Edition’s free communication, collaboration, and publishing tools, including email accounts on the school’s domain. MCCID students, faculty, staff, and even alumni can now avail of this fast, secure and reliable webmail using Gmail account.

Ervin Reyes Awarded PSD’s Most Outstanding Alumnus together with Ms. Carol Bie and Tess Buenaventura

The Philippine School for the Deaf in line with their Centennial Celebration, awarded of plaque of recognition to 100 people and organizations that helped shape the progress of the Filipino deaf. Among the recipients of the award are: Sir Ervin R. Reyes (MCCID Deaf Coordinator) – Most Outstanding Alumni, Ma’am Carolina T. Cordero-Bie (Former MCCID Faculty) – Most Outstanding Alumni, and Ma’am Teresa B. Buenaventura (MCCID Board of Incorporator and former faculty) – Most Outstanding Sign Language Interpreter.

MCCID Director and Coordinator Lectures in PSDAA Seminar

MCCID Training Director Jojo Esposa and Deaf Coordinator Ervin Reyes were invited as lecturers during the Philippine School for the Deaf Alumni Association Seminar coinciding with the 100th Anniversary of PSD last December 6, 2007, at Copacabana Hotel, Pasay City.

MCCID won in Chess and Basketball Games

MCCID Lecture Hall became the venue for the 2nd Deaf Chess Tournament of the Philippine Deaf Life and Sports Club last October 27, 2007 where MCCID Alumna Kristine Salvador retained her medal for the second time.

MCCID alumnus and star player center Emil Zion V. Punzalan received the Most Valuable Player Award during the Philippine Association of the Deaf Cup – Deaf Men’s Basketball League Finals held last September 2 at the San Lorenzo Sports and Lifestyle Center in Congressional Ave., Quezon City.

Meanwhile, the MCCID Angels Team bowed to fourth place when they were beaten by the College of St. Benilde Devils Team, 86 – 78. Aside from Punzalan, other MCCID awardees include Ricky Asia – Sportsmanship Award and Mark Ty and Jerome Marzan – Back to Year Ten Defenses.

Students Create Video Commercial Spoofs on MCCID Youtube Channel

As part of the school’s 14th Founding Anniversary, the added attraction was the video-showing of commercial spoof done by deaf actors and directed by their instructor, Sir Ervin Reyes. The videos have already been uploaded to YouTube since last November 2007. More than 2,000 visitors have already viewed the videos on their computer screens worldwide since then. MCCID has created its own Youtube Channel.

www.mccid.edu.ph Awarded “3rd Disabled Friendly Website”

Achievements

www.mccid.edu.ph, the official website of Manila Christian Computer Institute for the Deaf Foundation, Inc. is now the recipient of the “3rd Disabled Friendly Website” of the Philippines. The Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Vision Office Limited, and the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP) awarded a plaque of recognition to MCCID. Sir Jojo Esposa Jr., MCCID Training Director, and Sir Ervin Reyes, Deaf Coordinator, received the plaque.

MCCID Training Director at GAWDS Web Site and Founding Core Member of Philippine Web Accessibility Group

MCCID Training Director Sir Jojo Esposa Jr. was featured on the front page of the Guild of Accessible Web Designers Website since September 4, 2006, as part of his efforts in promoting web accessibility in the Philippines and introducing Philippine Web Accessibility Group (PWAG) through the initiatives of the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP). Mr. Esposa is currently the only Filipino member of the international group of web accessibility advocates based in the United Kingdom.

MCCID Now an International GAWDS Member

Manila Christian Computer Institute for the Deaf Foundation, Inc. through its Training Director, Sir Jojo I. Esposa Jr., is now a full member of the International Guild of Accessible Web Designers. In an official letter sent by GAWDS administrator Ms. Mel Pedley, MCCID has passed the web standards set by the international group and they are willing to assist Mr. Esposa in whatever way they can in order to promote web accessibility.

MCCID Students Demonstrate their Skills in Job Fair 2006

Achievements

Four graduates/students of Manila Christian Computer Institute for the Deaf were tasked to demonstrate their computer skills during the Job Fair for Persons with Disabilities 2006 at the Occupational Safety and Health Auditorium in Quezon City with Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo graced the event which helps disabled citizens apply for jobs and or possible training. The yearly job fair was co-sponsored by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Office of the President, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP).

Webmasters’ Interface on Accessible ICT for PWDs Held

Sir Jojo Esposa Jr. provided a short lecture about a deaf, deafness as a disability, and good practices on designing accessible websites based on the experience of www.mccid.edu.ph site during the Webmaster’s Interface on Accessible ICT for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) held from May 15 – 18, 2006 at Mango Park Hotel, Cebu City.

MCCID won in Various Sports Events

Ericson Guillermo got the championship trophy in the 1st Deaf Badminton Tournament. Mark Anthony Ty bags the silver medal in Men’s Division while Kristine Salvador receives the silver medal in Women’s Division during the 1st Chess Tournament for the Deaf. Five members of the MCCID team won special awards in the 1st Deaf Basketball Games. They are Emil Zion Punzalan – Mythical 5; Jerome Marzan, Sir Oscar Purificacion, and Jose Juan Bautista – Defense; and Ma’am Dianne Barcelona – Best Muse. MCCID also received the Plaque of Participation.

MCCID Signs MOA with DOST-MIRDC

The Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC), an attached agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Manila Christian Computer Institute for the Deaf held last April 26, 2006, at the DOST-MIRDC Training Room, Bicutan, Taguig City.

MCCID wins 3rd Place in Waste Reuse Tilt

Gibson A. Cruz, 1st-year DBT student won third place and “Most Versatile Award” in the On-the-Spot Waste Re-use Contest for his “Gift Box” entry while Dianne A. Barcelona’s “Picture Frame with Flower Vase” won the Most Attractive award. The contest was held last July 21, 2006 at SM San Lazaro. A total of twenty four persons with disabilities competed in this event sponsored by the National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons (NCWDP). The activity was in line with the yearly celebration of National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.

Quezon City Mayor Awards MCCID Alumni

Jose Adrian V. Freznosa and Bryann L. Gregorio were awarded the Quality Community Award of Excellence Medals by Quezon City Mayor Feliciano SB Belmonte Jr. at the Quezon City Hall.

2005

Three 1st Place and One 3rd Place Gold Medals of Excellence in 12th Philippine National Skills Competition

Achievements

For the first time in the history of the competition, three out of five competitors from the National Capital Region in the TESDA administered Philippine National Skills Competition was from MCCID. They are Aldrin Gabriel (Desktop Publishing), Dianne Barcelona (English Text Processing), and Glenn Ortega (Web Page Designing). Emil Zion Punzalan won 3rd place in the Photography contest. They will represent the country in the 7th International Skills Competition in Japan 2007.

Five Gold, Five Silver, and One Bronze Medals of Excellence in 2nd NCR – Abilympics Skills Competition

A total of five gold medals (Web Page Design, English Text Processing, Desktop Publishing, Cabinet Making, and Photography), Five silver medals (Web Page Design, English Text Processing, two from Computer Assembly and Poster Designing) as well as one bronze medal (painting oil on canvass) were given to MCCID students during the NCR – Regional Abilympics Skills Competition last November 2005.

MCCID Director and Student Receive Excellence Awards

Sir Jojo I. Esposa received the People’s Choice Award aged 40 and below for his achievement in the field of Education for the disabled. Aldrin D. Gabriel also received the Asia-Pacific Excellence Award for persons with disabilities. The award was given by the National Consumers Foundation.

Silent World Comic Strip Published in Manila Bulletin

Comic strips drawn by Sir Ervin Reyes, Sir Oscar Purificacion, and Dianne Barcelona were published in the Manila Bulletin from September to November 2005. This is the first-ever comic strip about deaf culture printed in a Philippine newspaper

TESDA – MCCID signed Memorandum of Agreement

TESDA Women’s Center and MCCID forged a partnership providing technical, livelihood and entrepreneurship programs for MCCID students.

Deaf Students Designed Web sites to Schools for the Deaf for Free

As part of their thesis, graduating students designed websites for Isabela School for the Deaf, Philippine Federation of the Deaf, Philippine Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Internacional Teatro Silencio Filipinas, and Filipino Deaf Visual Art Group.

Academic Excellence Award for National Capital Region to Aldrin Gabriel

Achievements

This annual award was given to Aldrin Gabriel in August by TESDA-NCR beating other regular (hearing) schools in Metro Manila. MCCID had a total of five scholars under the Private Education Scholarship Fund Assistance for Private Schools (PESFA).

4th Place in On-the-spot Drawing Contest for Aquarius Balisi and Carina Agasang

This annual award was given by National Historical Commission in celebration of Disability Awareness Week, July 2004.

International Delegates Visit MCCID

Professors and deans of Tsukuba College of Technology in Japan visited MCCID in February. Then, Thailand-based Asia Pacific Development Center for Disability board of directors headed by Dr. Akiie Ninomiya visits MCCID in September 15.

Cash Prize from Pres. Gloria-Macapacal Arroyo to International Medallist Ervin Reyes

This cash reward was given last January 2004 in recognition for his achievement in India 2003.

Bronze Medal for Ervin R. Reyes in Web Page Design

Achievements

Sir Ervin won during the 6th International Abilympics Skills Competition in New Delhi, India November 2003. He was the first Filipino deaf ever to win in this competition held every four years and participated in by 32 countries all over the world. Sir Jojo Esposa acts both as a coach for all the Filipino IT competitors and sign language interpreter during the contest.

100% Passing Rate in Data Encoding Certification Examination

This is the first time TESDA experienced a 100% passing rate to those who took the competency examination for data encoding, an equivalent of the Career Civil Service Examination (sub-professional).

Eight Students Passed the PESFA Scholarship Award

First-year students were among the first recipients of scholarship awards given by Private Education Students Fund Assistance through TESDA.

MCCID Featured in ABS-CBN Channel 23 Show

Sir Jojo Esposa and Sir Ervin Reyes were both interviewed and MCCID featured in the Digital Tour Program of Studio 23 which was aired on Sunday, May 23 at 10:30 pm.

MCCID one of Signatory/Observer in Manila Accessible ICT Design Recommendations

MCCID represented the deaf community in the Philippines during the Web Enabled Accessibility Interregional Seminar and Regional Demonstration Workshop on ICT attended by delegates from Asia-Pacific.

Gold Medal for Ervin Reyes in Web Page Design

Achievements

Sir Ervin Reyes got the most complete website design during the 10th Philippine National Skills Competition (PNSC) held at Davao City in September 2001 which earned him the gold medal. He overwhelmingly beat all hearing winners from 12 regions. He represented the National Capital Region which got the overall championship trophy. Sir Jojo Esposa acts both as a coach and interpreter during the contest.

Gold Medal for Ervin Reyes in Web Page Design, Silver Medal for Oscar Purificacion in On-the-spot Graphics Design, and Silver Medal for Andref De Veas in Web Page Design

Trophy for MCCID for the Most Number of Winners

MCCID received a trophy for having the most medals received and the most number of participants (12 overall) during the 4th Regional Abilympics Competition held at TESDA last May 2001.

MCCID Holds 1st Invitational Collegiate Volleyball Tournament

MCCID invited deaf college students from the Bible Institute for the Deaf (BID), CAP College School for the Deaf, and DLS-College of St. Benilde for the Annual Volleyball sports fest. This is in line with the school’s goal of fostering unity among college deaf communities within Metro Manila. CSB got the 1st place trophy donated by President Gloria Arroyo while MCCID got the silver trophy from both the Male and Female divisions.

First Deaf Worker in the Office of the President

Emilie Padullon, a 2nd batch MCCID graduate, was the first deaf person ever to set foot at Malacanang Palace as one of the employees of the Philippine President. She started out in 1998 as one of the staff of then-Senator Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

MCCID increases training program to three years

MCCID introduced two new curricular three-year programs namely Diploma in Arts and Computer Design Technology and Diploma in Business Technology.

Manila City Councillor Hires an MCCID Deaf Graduate

Marinela Veras, the class valedictorian was the first deaf graduate hired by former judge now 3-time City Councillor Casimiro Sison.

Annual Sports Fest Introduced

In line with the program of deaf’s social integration with the hearing community, MCCID participated in the Sports Fest 2000 held at the Sta. Mesa district. Although they are combined with the hearing students, they were given enough exposure in the team events like basketball, volleyball, and table tennis. They did not receive any medals but they were given recognition for the efforts that they have accomplished.

Most Outstanding Service Provider for FG Jose Miguel Arroyo, Most Outstanding Teacher for the Deaf for Sir Ervin Reyes and Most Outstanding Deaf Student for Marinela Veras

Atty. Mike Arroyo, husband of then Vice President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo received the award for accepting five deaf graduates of MCCID. Sir Ervin and Ma’am Marinela Veras received the awards during the annual Deaf Awareness Week Program held at Mandaluyong City Hall presented by the Metro Manila Association of Agencies for the Deaf.

MCCID Introduces House Visit Program

House Visit activity was included as part of MCCID’s program of bridging the gap between deaf students and their mostly hearing families. This is part of the student’s Personality Development and Public Relations subject. It has renewed relationships among parents and deaf children as well as developed bonding between the school and the family. Most families don’t know how to communicate through sign language. This has become an opportunity for the parents to talk to their children spontaneously with the aid of a sign language interpreter. This program has proven to be successful and effective in bridging the communication gap between deaf children and their parents. No other school does this program.

Philippine Senator Hires Four More MCCID Graduates

Former Senator now President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo accepted four more deaf graduates of MCCID to work under her senatorial staff.

MCCID Graduate Receives Encoder of the Year Award

MCCID 2nd batch graduate, Leah Lopez bested all the hearing employees and among her 14 other deaf counterparts by winning the Encoder of the Year award during this years’ Team Building Seminar sponsored by NOVA Management Corporation. The company is a data encoding services corporation that accepts the hearing impaired in their workforce mostly from MCCID. Other deaf alumni also received awards. They are Aldrin Medina, Perfect Attendance Award; Reynaldo Famisan, Most Promising Employee and Joel Billedo, Most Improved Performance Award. Each received a P500 cash reward aside from the certificate of recognition.

Deaf student won a gold medal during Deaf Awareness Week Celebration

Marinela Veras won the gold medal in the History contest during the Deaf Awareness Week celebration hosted by the City of Mandaluyong.

MCCID Students Participated in Regional Paralympics 1998

For the first time, MCCID joined in the Sports competition for Persons with Disabilities. They participated in basketball, marathon and volleyball.

1997

MCCID Opens Program for Employment Assistance

As part of its innovative approach to training, MCCID included a program to assist the students in getting documents that are needed in applying for a job. They are being brought to government agencies and helped in getting Birth Certificates (National Statistics Office), Social Security Systems ID, National Bureau of Investigation Clearance, and Tax Identification Numbers. No other school for the deaf in the Philippines has this program.

MCCID Training Director as Official SL Interpreter of Ms. America Heather Whitestone

Achievements

Sir Jojo I. Esposa Jr., MCCID Training Director was the official sign language interpreter of the first deaf person who became Ms. America in 1995, Ms. Heather Whitestone-Mccallum during her goodwill visit in the Philippines. She was invited by the Philippine Institute for the Deaf, an oral school.

MCCID Online Debuts on the Internet

Achievements

The first and only website dedicated to the deaf in the Philippines went online as early as 1997, two years after the introduction of the Internet. It features everything about MCCID and includes a directory of institutions for the deaf in the country. It is also the most popular website for the Deaf still alive up to this time.

MCCID Graduate as Staff of Senator Gloria-Macapagal Arroyo

Former Senator now President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo through her daughter, Ma’am Luli Arroyo accepted Emilie Padullon, 2nd batch deaf graduate of MCCID.

Two-year program Introduced

Based on its research study on the increasing demands of computer literate workers and at the same time, better-skilled computer typists, MCCID has increased its training program from one to two years. A total of 11 deaf students enrolled in this new program.

MCCID introduces Filipino Deaf Culture in curriculum, a first in the Philippines

Subjects like Values Education and Christian Work Ethics, Personality development and Public relations as well as Filipino Deaf Culture were introduced and strengthened.

1995

NCWDP Recognizes MCCID as one of Pioneer Institute for the Deaf in the Philippines

The National Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, a government agency tasked to provide concerns for Persons with Disabilities recognized the pioneering work of MCCID for the deaf community in Metro Manila.

MCCID inks agreement with PRID

In support of the strengthening of the sign language training program of the Philippines, MCCID signed an agreement with the Philippine Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (PRID) to provide financial assistance as well as moral backing.

MCCID Conducts first OJT and Hiring Program

MCCID prepared its first batch of Deaf graduates (9) for their on-the-job training and hiring program. The institute was able to make tie-up schemes with the following companies: NOVA Management Corporation, Cybersoft Inc. and 3M Philippines.

CAID Officially Recognizes MCCID

Convention of American Instructors for the Deaf, an American organization established in 1903 accepted MCCID as their only representative in the Philippines.

1994

MCCID Conducts first Deaf Awareness Week Program

In line with the Philippine government’s directive proclaiming every second week of November as Deafness Awareness Week, MCCID Conducted its first Deaf Awareness Week program for the hearing community in Sta. Mesa, Manila. Products made by the Deaf were exhibited at the lobby like t-shirts, novelty items, Christmas decors and computer software for the deaf. Also, a weeklong free sign language training was conducted and a mini-theater presentation of “A Deaf To Remember” focusing on the Filipino Deaf Culture.

MCCID increases program to One Year

In June 1994, MCCID created the one-year Computer Software Operations Technology Course with 11 students initially enrolled. Two of them, Oscar Purificacion and Carol Cordero eventually became MCCID faculty.

MCCID Officially Opens with Two Deaf Students

In the 3rd quarter of 1993, MCCID accepted its first two very significant deaf students in Computer Repair and Servicing Technology: Ervin Reyes who is now MCCID’s Deaf Coordinator, and Julius Andrada also the Deaf Coordinator of CAP College School for the Deaf.
